I know some people hate his Rage skill, but they can be quite useful. Lets say in Zozo, some players die multiple times at that place but it is easier if you use Gau's Templar rage since it can cast Fira that way (which was unavailable at that part of the game) and to kill enemies instantly.
Stray Cat rage is also useful since if he manages to use Cat Scratch, he will deal quite big damage.

So what do YOU think about Gau?

I don't use him unless I have to really, which has been a grand total of once so far

I hate not being able to control him, although I normally dedicate on person to healing and stuff anyway itprobably wouldnt make any difference seeing all I ever do is attack anyway......but I like to know I have full control of my party members in case of an emergency :gasp:

That and he just annoys me in general

If you get the right rage skills, Gau is very useful. I've had him end random battles almost immediately after engaging the enemy.

Just get him, I think it's stray cat, and he'll be quite useful :D

He's not a beginner character and I could imagine that some people would get a little bored building up his skills. I've gotten impatient a few times and refused to use him on some play throughs. XD

I actually used Gau in a few battles. After I took him to the Veldt to get abilities, I'd go to where the weak monsters were and see which abilities were strongest. Like others have said, Stray Cat Rage is a great one to have. Gau is quite useful in battle...but personality wise, he's horrible. If he says "Thou" one more time :poked:. But I tire of everyone saying he's useless in battle, that title belongs to Relm :wacky:

I think his personality is more underrated than his combat usefulness (doesn't he have a Psycho Gau or something similar to Psycho Cyan?)...

His scene in the WoR is great & one of the best in the game (& the series). He's such a tough lil guy! :'(

Not many of the game's other powerhouses can equip the Snow Muffler either though...

I never used Gau a whole lot, but he's definitely one of the stronger characters. On my first playthrough I probably lumped him in with Cyan and the Yeti guy as useless characters, but we know better now don't we? His rage is easier to use and more effective then the yeti's, which is shit, and Mog's, which becomes more or less useless in the WoR. I still prefer more well-rounded characters like Setzer or Edgar, but if you wanted a secondary character that can do some major damage Gau is probably your man.
