Playstation I received a PS3 as a gift today...

as well as a copy of FFXIII.

Never had a PS3 and never played FFXIII before.

The PS3 was used.

How can I determine what model it is ?
I want to learn if it's backwards compatible.

I have seen youtube videos of people putting larger hard drives in their PS3s. It is worthwhile doing that ?

The easiest way to know if it has BC is by trying to play a PS2 game. All PS3 models can play all PSone games.
(If it's 60gb or 80gb it's likely to have BC.)

If you want to know the size of your HDD go in:
Settings > System Settings > System Information

If your max space is under 70gb, you should strongly consider upgrading to a bigger HDD.


Get 2 more PS3s, and you'll be just like me.

You should be able to know if you look at the model number. If your PS3 model number ends in any of the following:

CECHE01
CECHA01
CECHB01

It should be a BC model. Check the back of your PS3 where the wires are plugged into the system to see the model number.
