I was digging a large whole for a cherry tree, and below a few old pipes in homes no longer used I found this old bone.

It is really a dark brown almost black but the photos add a grain of their own , and give it a glare that it does not really have. This is not a glossy bone.

My camera is messed up but I tried to get some photos

Questions I ask myself are how long does it take a bone to turn that color For a bone to turn dark grayish brown almost black I would think its pretty old. Most bones found in yards are dusty yellow faded bones. This bone is almost black in actual fact, regardless of photo imitation .

It does not look fractured rather like it fell apart over several years, its a small piece of bone, too small to be complete . It was part of a much larger bone.

How long does it take for bone to fall apart to this degree? It's a fairly small piece of bone.

It does not show in the photos well but this is a curved piece of bone .

So it was part of a curved bone, I am thinking rib bone. It is far too large a segment though to fit into a rabbit maybe a dog or something larger . A large dog or deer.

This is quite extraordinary compared to other bones found in backyards. If you can, you can go to your local museum with the bone safely carried in a zip-lock bag and ask a staff member of the museum if they can identify the bone or take you to a scientist.

This bone looks fairly interesting. You better just hope it's one of the ribs of a unicorn or something. :gasp:
