Help with the "Tunnels"

Alright so I chose to be a Mage when the dude asked me in the city. And I go to the tunnels and I have done nothing but get my arse beat everytime I fight a monster down there. Can somebody explain to me what to do, besides get my arse kicked of course?

To my knowledge there is only one game in the series where you can choose to only be a mage and it is the first one. To my knowledge there are no tunnels where you fight in them in that game. This has to be an Inferno topic. With the inferno shut down and being remade I believe this topic is useless.
