hate or pity Aeris? (SPOILER)

Why would I hate or pity her? She was a good character and good in battle. She didn't really piss me off in any way, I guess there wasn't really time for that since she dies pretty much in the beginning of the game.

I wouldn't pity her either. She gave it her best to save the planet, and even though she died I really see no reason to pity her, maybe feel a little sorry for her, but not pity, there's a really big difference between the two IMO.

firstly:
i was referring to 7 years as the whole of the events between Aerith and Zack and innevitably, Cloud.

Then why did you say Cloud spent 7 years trying to avenge her and find someway to be with her, then? And if you did mean to suggest that it referred to the time from Zack's meeting Aerith to the end of AC, you are again incorrect. It is a 9 year span.

If you payed attention closely to the AC story line Cloud was never at the home with Tifa and the children, he was always sleeping in the Sector 5 Slums Church, not at his 'home'.

This is incorrect. Cloud spent the majority of the two year gap running a delivery business during the day, coming home to spend time with Tifa and the kids. It is only a few days before AC that he properly 'leaves' the house. Previously, he was simply visiting the church, the same as he visits Zack's grave.

also there was discrefencies in the translation of AC from Japanese to english there are lines that state: "how could i allow the only woman i ever loved to be killed like that." as which was stated by Cloud.

Um, No. Not in the slightest. No such line exists in the Japanese script. Not in the official script, not in the subtitles, or the official translations.

Also if you follow the entire story from the original, Cloud states on multiple occasions that he is seeking revenge against Sephiroth for 1) destroying Nibelheim; 2) ruining his life; and 3) for killing Aerith. The whole of my statement is techinically correct and there is no mistake in there.

And he was seeking revenge against Sephiroth well before Aerith's death. She is addended to his reasons for revenge, not his primary.

secondly:
Cloud says a few times throughout AC that he is searching for a way to see Aerith again, it is usually during those scenes with him and Aerith standing back to back and speaking in a non-colloquiel way. He states, "i wish that there was some way to see you," and Aerith replys, "I am always with you(i'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist)."

Again, no. No such lines exist. Where are you getting these? The topic of discussion when Cloud is in the whitespace is about forgiveness and topics of that nature.

thirdly:
It is due to the relationship between Aerith and Cloud that I state that she "kicked him in the unmentionables" by walking away with Zack. Cloud was in love with Aerith, as was Zack.

So you claim, but no evidence to support this claim can ever be provided, so you'll forgive me when I call bollocks.

But, Aerith was in love with both of them through the course of the story. However, due to Zack being killed, Aerith 'moved on' and met and fell in love with Zack.

You don't know how correct your typo is. The Crisis Core Ultimania states Aerith becomes interested in Cloud because of her feelings for Zack. Aerith was chasing the phantom of Zack, whom she is in denial regarding the demise of, in Cloud's pastiche personality.

As love is a pwerful thing, the site of your mentor and the only woman you ever loved walking away together, is quite crushing on some level.

I'm sure, but Aerith isn't "the only women Cloud has ever loved"- if nothing else, the CCU saying Cloud fell in love with Tifa before leaving for SOLDIER kiboshes that one- or even a woman there is any evidence he has been shown to love.

if you believe i have made "other egregious errors" send it to my inbox, don't clutter the forums with pointless corrections. i find it rather rude.

I find it rather rude that you clutter the forum with egregious factual errors.
And I prefer to conduct things of this nature in the public eye.

Mods, if this is becoming too extreme or "LTD'y", I request that this be split, and locked if deemed necessary, rather than deleted.

The LTD thread was locked for this same reason people, any further posts on this subject will result in infractions. This is neither a debate OR on topic. Please keep it on topic in future. Thank you

My original reply was deleted for being 'off topic', since it apparently was too likely to lead to another LTD, but I still feel the need to correct the misconceptions of Ancient here. Mods, if this still strikes you as 'too LTD', I ask that you ask me to revise this instead of deletion, as there are other egregious errors in this post.
The problem with this thread lies in this crucial sentence; the topic asks us to discuss whether or not we sympathise with Aerith. I know that you're not alone in diverting the direction of this topic but I'm only making an example of your post. Posts aren't being deleted based on being "too LTD" but, in fact, are being deleted based on being off-topic and irrelevant to the matter at hand.

But if the reasons for sympathizing with Aerith or disliking her are incorrect, then does it not behoove us to correct those reasons? If someone said they disliked Aerith because she killed a man in cold blood, or because they thought she was a streetwalker or a drug pusher, would you not correct the person who said that? Same reasoning here.

well i never really used Aeris much
my party mainly was usually Tifa,Cloud and ethier Vincent or Cid
so when she got picked off I mean i was a little shocked but at the same time it was like someone was taking my extra baggage for me i never really used her at all and my levels were advanced so when i fought demon gate i was around level 42 so i had no problem

well i've only played through ff7 once tho i'm thinking about doing it again sometime just to unlock vincent and yuffie and to get all the characters' final weapons and limit breaks, but i don't think aeris is overrated. honestly i did in fact avoid using her because i knew she was going to die, but once i got to the cutscene of her death i just felt kinda empty...i didn't have any regrets about not using her in combat tho cuz i really liked tifa's limit break =) but aeris was a great character and she deserves "pity" (for lack of a better word)

I neither hate nor pity her. I loved her personality and was upset in losing her - but she became a martyr with her ultimate sacrifice.

If one is devoted to defend something, they do. No matter the cost. And even though she is now unable to influence things on a physical level, she influences them in another way that first appears to be nothing, but in the end leads to something that no living being can accomplish.

Like summon Holy to save the planet, and then come up with a cure for Geostigma.

Aerith-sama!

When i first played FF7 i actually got on the date with Tifa. I didnt really mind though. And then i saw aeris die, and i was surprised and such. I replayed FF7 many times and every since then i always used and picked the right thing to say to Aeris, knowing she was going to die. I wanted to make her short time alive, happy (yes i know its just a video game). But I want to know, did YOU use aeris up til she died and cherished her before she died OR did you avoid using her and wasting your time knowing she was going to die??

I don't hate Aerith, and I wouldn't call it pity...

I always kept Aerith in my party even though I know she was gonna die, its not really a waste everyone else levels up anyway, her reactions and answers to the stuff in the game are so adorable too, and she was always happy and she was never angry ^^ its good to see a character like that in a game set for gloom and sadness, Plus she's wearing pink which goes with blue and she just brightens the whole party :>

I never hated Aerith. Well, i did prefer Tifa to her (mainly because I used her at the beginning of the game so i got attached to her, plus she was quite cool and that Aerith came later), but Aerith was OK. Actually, she was more than ok. She was a good and a kind person as well as a cheerful person to boot. She was selfless as she tried to protect everyone and died in the act doing it. I think that she was special to almost everyone in the team. Even Tifa liked her despite being rivals in love. I didn't truly have that much pity towards her death, because she seemed to have been accepting about it. I mean, in the Lifestream, of course. Besides, she got reunited with Zack, didn't she? That must have been a revelation for her as she did not know Zack died. it was much later in the game that i felt quite upset, but like i said, not pitiful.

The first time I played FFVII I actually knew she was going to die and I had heard about the date scene. What I didn't know was that it wasn't as simple as Cloud/Aerith, I had absolutely no idea there would be a 'Tifa factor' so to speak. So I started the game out like...favouring Aerith a lot because I just assumed she was the one and by the time I REALLY noticed the whole love triangle (and that it wasn't just a trivial thing) I was already far enough in so that Aerith got the date scene...even though I found out that I prefer Tifa, especially with Cloud.

I don't dislike Aerith at all however, she's just not my favorite, and while her death (and arguably her life) was tragic there is a sort of proudness associated with her sacrifice. Besides, continuing along to Advent Children, though she may be dead I don't think she will ever be GONE. Some part of her is still with the team especially in the strong memories everyone keeps of her (ribbons!). Besides....she was reunited with Zack (want to talk about TRAGIC!)

I don't like the framing of the question. Like many here, I neither hate nor pity Aerith -- both have negative connotations, the former being intense anger, and the latter being a sort of scornful, condescending sympathy. I think that the actual question you are trying to get at is: "Were you affected by Aerith's fate or weren't you." In my opinion, the questions hinges on three sub-questions: 1. Did you know about her fate before you played the game or didn't you? 2. How did you feel about Aerith as a story character? 3. How did you feel about Aerith as a playable character.

1. Did you Know?
This is a threshold question, meaning it affects the way that you answer the following questions, although it can do it in both negative and positive ways. If you did not know, then you included or failed to include Aerith strictly as a result of the following two questions. If you DID know of her fate before playing the game, then you likely either (a) figured it was not worth investing time in her and avoided her like the plague; or (b) cherished every second that you had with her and devloped her considerably. Thus if you knew, the analysis is over and you either (a) didn't care about what happened to her; or (b) did, again, based on the above choice. However, if you did not know about what happens, you must go down to the next question.

How do you like Aerith as a story character?
This is, in my opinion, the most important variable. If you did not happen to know of Aerith's fate, your opinion of her largely turned on how interesting of a character you thought that she was. While the variables to this question are considerable, I find the most common determinants of whether or not you liked her largely depended on whether you thought that (a) she was annoying; (b) she was innocent and endearing; and if you happen to have a Y chromosome, (c) whether or not she was hotter than Tifa. Add these together and you largely have decided whether or not you like Aerith which in turn decides how you feel about her ultimate fate. However, we still have to account for the third question.

How do you like Aerith as a Playable Character?
This question is not nearly important as the two before it, but provides a sort of qualifying effect. For example, if for some reason you were in love with Aerith's healing limits and thought that her staffs looked just bitchin, you are likely to have reevaluated your opinion of her for the better and thus been more affected by her fate. However, if you thought that she was worthless in battle, then no matter how much you liked her as a story character you were likely less affected by her fate: "Poor Girl, but now I can get Vincent, and he actually DOES something."

Anyway, that is just how I see things, feel free to add something that comes to mind

Well Aeris is the one you would wanna marry and Tifa is the one you would wanna futt before you met Aeris. To put it crudely. I got Aeris first time round and I was most distressed to see her die.. LOL

I don't pity her. But I can't say I hate her like how I used to anymore either. She's not growing on me. But I just really don't care for her.

I used to get really aggrivated like how most Cloti-Fans will if some Aeris and Cloud fan talks about something they don't like. But now... Dunno, guess I grew out of that.

I just don't like her personality, how she fights, how she acts. I don't like her paired with Cloud. (Obvious?) Yet at the same time I don't hate her. She's there, she got killed by Sephiroth, I think all of that was great, and not as in great that she died, but just a really good story-twister.

My mom cried xD I didn't. (My mom's a Yuffie lover... o_o)

But... Nah, neither of them, but I definitely don't pity her.
