Blue Mage
Has anyone else here read these? I really can't offer up enough praise for them, and they have a connection to us Final Fantasy people, what with the main character being named after our favorite treasure hunter and all.
The first book is set in what is more or less a fantasy version of Renaissance Venice, and it's about a gang of thieves and con artists. Lots of great characters, evil sea creatures, lush description, fun wordplay, and fates worse than death. Very unique and extremely well-written. The are seven books planned, the first two are already out, and the third is supposed to be coming some time next year.
If you're at all interested, I suggest you check out Scott Lynch's website, where he has some excerpts: http://www.scottlynch.us/excerpts.html
