Help FFXIII: When and Which

So I've been burning through hours playing FFXIII. It's so much fun I have to finish it before I do anything else. However, I haven't really done much to my weapons/accessories.

At what point of the game do you guys start leveling up and upgrading your weapons and accessories? Which weapons and accessories do you put a lot of time and gil into?

At around the point where i claimed Sazhs eidolon, most of my characters weapons were level 10+. Weapons do help, although i didnt really notice its importance until i encountered the first feral behemoth. It's not a boss unit, i'll assume you know that, but its a hard shell to crack when all you're doing is slash and burn, getting weapon upgrades will make fighting faster and efficient, especially when you're dealing with arrogant bastards such as those.
