Vaan, now an 18-year-old sky pirate with his own airship, and Penelo, Vaan's 17-year-old navigator. It is hinted through trailers that the romantic link is growing between them, which will most likely be explored through the process of the game. Their treasure-hunting adventures take them to the Floating Continent, or Purvama, of Lemurés and the ground below, where their story begins. Other returning characters from Final Fantasy XII, such as Balthier and Fran, who played major parts in the first game, are also playable, as well as some characters that played minor roles, such as Vaan's orphan friends. Also, there will be new faces, such as Lluyd, a member of the Aegyl race, who have wings protruding from their backs. It is the first game announced in the Ivalice Alliance campaign.
Preliminary reports on the battle system have indicated that the game will have a modified version of Final Fantasy XII's Active Dimension Battle System; however, it can be played entirely with the stylus. When seen, the battle system looks strikingly like an RTS but with more depth in terms of character attacks and functionality. Like in Final Fantasy XII, battles initiate once the party comes in contact with the enemy, and the characters will attack automatically. The player will be given the option to use the stylus to give commands to the characters by tapping on them with the stylus. It will be possible to change their target, set gambits, use various abilities, and more. Area spells can be cast by drawing a rectangle around the enemy with the stylus.
Espers will return in Revenant Wings and will have a larger role than in Final Fantasy XII; Toriyama has said Revenant Wings will have more summons than any previous Final Fantasy game. A trailer was released in the offical website, presenting a battle demonstration between the player and the boss named Ifrit. There are also confirmed appearances of Shiva, a Final Fantasy summon, as a family of three. Summon abilities are learned via the new License Ring system. Returning Characters include:

Ba'Gamnan: Survived the Nam-Yensa incident and attempted to get revenge; Joined the group.

Basch: A man who spends his life in servitude.

The only new character is: Llyud, A 20-year old young warrior of the winged Aegyl race.
