[Short, irrelevant intro]
I made it a goal of mine a while ago to go through all Final Fantasies (excluding X2 and XI), including the ones not released in North America. This is because even though I never grew up playing these games, I heard a lot about them. VII is what drew me in.

Well, I played 1 and enjoyed it. But I couldn't enjoy II at all. So I gave up on the early ones and jumped right to VI. Having no experience with these games before (except VII), I of course have some noob questions. You may see me again. :)

I just got my first espers/magicite, and they definitely threw a wrench into my battle plan. There's a lot of brainstorming to come, most assuredly. But one thing I can't figure out, after searching guide after guide, is learning magic from these things.

I understand, basically, that I fight battles and I get Magic Points and I eventually learn magic. I also understand that the higher the number on a spell, say 10x, means I learn the spell faster than if it had a lower number, say 2x. But I still have 2 questions. 1.) How does each magic point correlate to the learning rate? For example, I could see how 2 Magic Points times 10x = 20 "learning points" or something, and after 40 "learning points" I learn a spell. Is that somewhat like how it works? 2.) When, exactly, do I get Magic Points? Does it happen every battle? Nearly every battle? Do I have to summon the esper to get Magic Points at all?

Thanks for your help!

Yes that is how it works.

You get magic points when you equip an esper. Then the only way to gain them is, yes, fighting battles. You don't even have to summon them. they will learn it after the battle as long as they're equip.

Thanks!

I thought this esper and magic learning stuff was going to greatly complicate things for me, but it turns out that it's a lot of fun! I'm really enjoying FFVI.
