I went with white mage red mage, warrior and thief, although if I played again Id probably exchange one of those for a monk. dont have to buy that dude weapons and everything in this game is so bloody expensive
I pick figher, white mage, black mage, monk. Red mage can't use ultra powerful spells and you have to use cure and damaging spells with caution or you'll run out of mp for that level. With White mage and black mage you get all the spells and dedicate them to cure or attack. Fighter is good cause he will last through the whole game as a good attacker and defense. monk to me in my opinion is better then a thief cause you don't have to buy that much equipment for him. On starting levels Monk needs a weapon but towards the end he can go bear and maybe hit for more damage then a fighter. If you want though you can get a thief instead of a monk but I strongly suggest you get a fighter, w.mage, b.mage.
I'd suggest the above part as well. To clarify: Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage.
The Warrior really goes without saying. You need someone to equip all those nice swords you'll be collecting on your travels, and he serves as a good damage-taker due to his high DEF and HP. Furthermore, once he becomes a Knight, he'll have low-level White magic available to him (like you'll need it at that stage, but eh).
The Monk will be annoying at first...but his attacks increase in power before too long and he'll be dealing just as much damage as your Warrior...and you don't need to buy him equipment.
White/Black Mage...it's simply a matter of a broader range of magic in each field. Red Mages/Wizards can only go so high in terms of spell levels. They're weaker...but they are definitely worth the effort.
