This list is for only the original console releases and not in any compilations, easier to list rather than explain.

Final Fantasy I (NES) - Japan (I) US (Not released)
Final Fantasy II (NES) - Japan (II) US (Not released)
Final Fantasy III (NES) - Japan (III) US (Not released)
Final Fantasy IV (SNES) - Japan (IV) US (I)
Final Fantasy V (SNES) - Japan (V) US (II)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES) - Japan (VI) US (III)
Final Fantasy VII onwards - Both Japanese and US games numbered the same.

Hope this helps.

I beg to differ. I played FF I on the NES so I know for sure FF I was released in the States as "Final Fantasy."

It's when you start getting into FFII - FFVI when things gets tricky. I know for a fact that FFV was not released in the USA until Square decided to do a PSX bundle. FF IV = FFII (USA) and FFVI = FFIII (USA). FFII and FFIII were not released in the USA during the NES era. Well anyway, those early Final Fantasy days for the NES and SNES were confusing.

The Final Fantasy games are numbered correctly after FFVII.

The Corrected List (orignal releases; Sorry if I only concentrate on USA and JPN) (Also, correct me if I'm wrong.)(Also, forgive me for not including the Famicon and Super Famicon.)

Final Fantasy I (NES, 1987) = Final Fantasy for both USA/JPN

Final Fantasy II (NES, 1988) = Originally not released outside of JPN

Final Fantasy III (NES, 1990) = Originally not released outside of JPN

Final Fantasy IV (SNES, 1991) = Final Fantasy II USA / No change in JPN

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (SNES, 1992) = No Change for USA / Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest USA for JPN / Mystic Quest Legend for EUR

Final Fantasy V (SNES, 1992) = Originally not released outside of JPN

Final Fantasy VI (SNES, 1994) = Final Fantasy III USA / No change in JPN

Final Fantasy VII onward are numbered correctly.
