There are practically no FMVs that have characters that are not Squall or Rinoa. (and an occasional Seifer)

Zell, Selphie, Quistis and Irvine all have their 'opener' FMVs when you first meet them, but that's where it ends for them. After that, you can count the FMVs that they're in with the fingers of one hand. There's the scene where Quistis destroys the robot spider (that is, if you opt not to destroy it yourself), a glimpse of Irvine's back and ponytail in the parade scene, and after that you don't see ANYTHING of them, until the very last scene, which is in black and white for fucks sake >_<.

Instead, you witness endless scenes of Squall rescuing Rinoa from endless perils, as well as all sorts of inanimate and/or irrelevant objects and people portrayed in FMVs. Missiles, explosions, galbadian soldiers, fishermen, spaceships, ANYTHING but good old Zell, Selphie, Quistis and Irvine. :(

I think there were so many parts in the game that could've or should've been made into FMVs...

Like, when the Gardens collided, did you REALLY need the flexibility of choosing your party to go to the 2B classroom? They could've incorporated a scene where Quistis owns some Galbadian ass with her whip instead (really, I'm sure everyone would've loved to see an FMV with her using that thing).

Squall jumping down a few stories in the prison (though he was actually supposed to be a few stories BELOW, huge slip up o_O) to save Zell could've been a short but awesome FMV.

The game could've forced you to take Selphie into space (I really think she's the one who would've wanted to go most) and had an FMV with her and Squall floating around upon arrival. That'd be cute (plus miniskirt and all, blol).

Finally, at the very end of the game, why couldn't there be an FMV of the whole party approaching Ultimecia's castle [and looking extremely badass ^_^]? Or at least glimpses of where they'd all end up after time compression? Like a little scene of a happy and pouncing Selphie winding up somewhere with Irvine, where he'd steal a kiss from her and get kicked or something. That'd be great.

Meh. In other words, FFVIII cutscenes were really lacking in terms of the other 'main' characters (something I can't say about any of the other FFs I've played).

What other scene would you guys liked to have seen as FMVs?

I admit I would have loved some more FMVs. I personally would have liked Selphies concert to have been made into an FMV, so you get different FMVs depending on which character has been paired with which instrument. I like the bad ass idea, then they start walking and Zell just falls over rofl :D

Yeah maybe a few more FMV's would have been a good idea
I haven't played it for a while but I do remember there being lots of Squall and Rinoa
Um yeah the concert would have been cool, and instead of making us run across between the gardens and watch the fighting maybe that could have been an FMV with a couple of the group getting involved in the fighting maybe?

I would have liked some more varied FMVs, but I love the FMVs that there are in FFVIII so much, I can let slide the fact they're fairly narrow in terms of character participation.

The FMVs are like that I think because FFVIII is primarily a game about Squall and Rinoa, the other characters are very much supporting players. This is one of the many things about the game that divides people. I am OK with that approach, others dislike it. In contrast FFVII and FFIX (FFX too to some extent) are very much ensemble pieces I found. I've enjoyed both ways of doing it, it's one of the things I like about the FF series, the variety.

But yeah still a few more FMVs with the others might have been nice!

Yes, FF VIII is really Squall and Rinoa's story, and everything else honestly takes the back seat to this romance, especially later in the game. The FMV's that already exist are wonderful, and I always preffered the interactions that they had outside of the FMV's considering that there was no voice acting for FF's yet.

Agreed. I love more cutscenes.
One more thing, FF VIII didn't have the character voice like FFX or FFVII CC, DOC, etc... Ofcourse, in that time, Square Enix couldn't make the voice character, but..., overall, how sad... :(.
There's a rumor that SE is going to remake FFVIII, i hope it's true. Can anyone confirm that?

I think we may have grown too accustomed to FMV's. In recent FF's, they're how the story moves. Or in the case of Xenosaga and FFXII, that's most of the game besides leveling. FFVII was the first to encorporate FMV's and VIII mostly refined it. Could have been any number of reasons. They had a budget to keep, wanted to emphasize the relationship between Squall and Rinoa, etc. You can notice how they got better at it with each game. FFVII's FMV's are...well they're pretty ugly now. Clunky, and only showed a few characters, most of them once or twice with the exception of Cloud and Sephiroth. With VIII they were much more graphically pleasing and showed all of the characters...but definitely not enough. With IX all characters were clearly seen actively in a few scenes at least. Of course with X, everybody is treated equally, generally speaking.

I mean who wouldn't want more cutscenes? We didn't get that cool look of Ultimecia's Castle, but that was improved with IX like with Alexandria Castle transforming, seeing Atmos, Odin, and Bahamut, the group escaping from Terra, etc. FFVIII was a transition, SE getting themselves settled with Final Fantasy is 3D. At the time it probably wasn't possible. Despite that, every FMV there was in FFVIII, I ate it up. Even now, I love replaying the game because they look gorgeous. At the very least, Quintis got a few scenes.

As for a FFVIII remake rumor...sorry I laughed a little. Honestly, there has been no true Final Fantasy remake, ever. There have been ports and little improvements with graphics or localization, and even a sweet CG opening, but nothing more. If they won't remake FFVII then they sure as hell won't be bothering with FFVIII. Besides, even though the character sprites look outdated, the game is still graphically pleasing, so I highly, highly doubt they will remake it. I'd prefer a FFVI remake myself, but that's just me.

Anyway, I can't think too clearly now since its late but...like someone else said, an FMV of everyone picking up an instrument and playing would have been awesome. Once again though, different characters with different instruments playing one of two songs, a bit hard. Still would have been awesome though. This is also a bit quirky. I've had this image of Selphie and Zell in the middle of a big battle and Selphie accidentally smacking Zell in the face with her nunchuks. I don't know, its been a thought in my head for years, and I think it would have been both very in character and really funny.

Thing is, the relationship between Squall and Rinoa seemed TOO emphasized, while the other characters' personalities seemed rushed. All you could really say about them all is, Selphie is perky and cheerful, Zell has way too much energy and an obsession with hotdogs, Irvine is a flirt, and Quistis is too mature for her own good. Ah well.

Also I highly doubt a remake will ever be made.

Hm, well maybe I'm dense but I never thought of the FMV's as focusing almost solely on Squall or Rinoa. I always saw them as really awesome FMV's, regardless of who was in them. I mean, Edea in CG is damn sexy...and somewhat terrifying.

I do agree on the characters, which I was disappointed with. Strangely though, I felt like I related with the characters as a whole much more than I have with any other main characters in a Final Fantasy. Maybe because they had their personalities but not much with their past besides the Orphanage thing, so you can relate them to similar friends you have in real life. I never had a Zell in my life though. I dunno, its hard to explain. I just felt closer to the characters than I ever did with Cloud and co., or Zidane and co.

Yes. Similar to Persona 3 and 4, the characters in FF VIII are actually quite normal (minus the mercenary part) compared to most RPGs. I mean, they are really just glorified high-schoolers who are terrified of what the future is bringing for them.

Wow, I never thought about it... I was always happy with the contents of the game's FMVs, so I didn't realize how unbalanced they were. The only FMV I really wish they could have added was a shot of Ultimecia's Castle.

more fmv's = better plot more often than not. they're not going to waste their time making those high quality animations without making it rEaLLY good

Yes more fmvs for this would have been the cherry on the cake , the game was good as it is, come to think about it , a remake of this would be epic.

I never really thought about it til now, but yeah, there's no where near enough FMV's of the other characters, that would have been nice, though it never really bothered me, I liek the FMV's we got, my favourite is the Sorceress memorial one :ryan:

Id of loved to have seen summat with Quistis' whip though, that would have been nifty, Irvine too :ryan:

I guess the other characters just took more of a back seat than usual... though it never really bothered me, or Id of picked up on it before now I imagine

Let's have a bit of substance in our posts, okay? We're not writing a Twilight spinoff here :wacky:

Actually, that really did annoy me. I was making an amv as a present for someone a while ago, and her favorite character is Zell. Do you know how many FMVs Zell is in? I found... one. Two, if you count the ending -__- It's ridiculous, and tbh I wanted more Irvine. Not only are they neglected in the FMVs, but in story-line overall really. Only good part of it is that it gives fanfic authors tons of room xD

But yeaaaaaah... I want more of the other characters! As much as I love Squall and Rinoa, I really don't think we need to see JUST them. MOAR IRVINE /fangirl

The complete focus on Squall and Rinoa in the story line is why this is my least favorite PSone final fantasy. Squall is kind of lame and if Seifer wasn't so cool the game wouldn't have been as cool. I like when they do more stories on the supporting characters which seems to be something they just avoid these days. They only do a tiny bit on the supporting characters in most RPG's and I hate that because my favorite characters are almost enver the leads.

Everyone always talks about how great this game is but the fact the other characters are basically neglected in almost every way always bummed me out. I thought Squall was so lame so the whole game I was just trying to get more story on the rest of them and then it never came. This game was a huge disappointment for me. It was the Final Fantasy that I had anticipated the most. I was like in between the ages of 12 and 14, and was let down so hard that I stopped playing Final Fantasies for awhile.

I agree, it's really sad that they don't focus the FMVs on other characters, i mean about 10 seconds for an intro and that's all they get really...

The focus on Squall and Rinoa always bothered me, not only because i simply dislike them both with passion but because the love story does not convince me at all.

There are however great FMVs that don't include Squall or Rinoa, like when The Ragnarok attacks Lunatic Pandora, that was probably one of my favourites.
