Help devistating underwater glitch

So i have been working on another playthrough of my original bff game, unfortunately i have been using an emulator because my ps2 has eaten the dirt. So i just destroyed the red sub and went back to Junon to steal the other submarine and fish out my master materia. After i got the sub i swam around the map normally so long as i was not submerged, after i went under the water my controls completely died, i couldn't move except for panning left and right...i couldn't even surface the sub! I did some research and apparently it has happened on some disc versions of the game but idk how to defeat this problem. Does anyone have any advise or a workaround for this? Thanks!
