Multiple Platforms Castlevania Concept?

Alright, I am a absolute n00b to this series. I just picked up a PSP game on whim one day, and from what I understand these games are stand alone anyways.

However, one thing kind of confuses me. The basic concept of each game is that Dracula

is revived every 100 years, so that's why there's always people (and games) to stop him every time

, but then why are there games with repeat protagonists? First I thought they were ancestors, but I think a few games involve the same exact person

So any clue about that, or am I just mistaken here? xD

'Castlevania: Symphony of the Night' should be remade I think. The series is at it's finest as being a scroller rather than an open environment. Symphony of the Night was definitely the best
