You want a hell of a lot of speed, for one thing. Optimally, you will have one point more speed than your opponent, making all of your opponent's speed worthless while you get to go first. However, such tactics WILL annoy your opponent to the point that he will probably not want to battle you, so I suggest getting some fixed stats as a compromise (set the speed so player 1 goes first, then player 2, then player 2's pet, then player 1's pet).
Potions, of course, will be a huge advantage. Remember, killing an enemy player is MUCH easier than killing an enemy monster, but they can kill you very fast, too. To make up for this, try to get just enough DEF and HP so that your player character can survive an opponent and his pet attacking you physically right in a row. It shouldn't be too hard if you have good armor. Get only as much DEX as slightly over your opponent's EVA (another place you may need to make a compromise), and put the rest on STR.
Pets, on the other hand, cannot follow the same stat setups as normal players because they cannot equip armor or weapons. Because of this, most players choose to make pets magic users, which in the end can be just as powerful as physical attacks. Be sure to always have the top of the line spells, leveled up a few times, if you want to do this. If you want your pet to be a physical attacker, get Master Claw at the Gagazet Dojo as soon as you unlock that area (it's very late in the game).
Of course, there are plenty of other strategies to winning, this is just the standard one that you will see most players using.
