An asteroid named Apophis has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth on April 13, 2036 and has shaken scientists to ask the UN for help in dealing with such an event.

Ex-astronaut, Rusty Schweickart, told an American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in San Francisco "It's not just Apophis we're looking at. Every country is at risk. We need a set of general principles to deal with this issue."

The president of Oregon-based Decision Research, a risk analysis organization, told reporters that the said asteroid could take out an entire city or region.

1 in a 45,000 chance doesn't sounds like to much, but the probablity is there, and I will probably be alive by 2036 so I hope that they take care of this by then, if nuclear weapons ever have any good use, now is the time, or then for that matter

Do u know what the name of the asteroid Apophis is named after the Egyptian god of evil which most ppl would know if they read more about history and future.

Quicksilver, that statement is like Armegeddon , but real and without actors..... I say they should send the actors from that movie to deal with it.

Asteroids are random hazzards...
Even though the chance is seemingly unlikely...it's still a good idea to have follow-up procedures in the case that such an event would occur...

I've just noticed that you seem to have an obsesion with space... and the destruction of the Earth Meikyousisui. Anyway i'm not really worried i mean 1 in 45000 chance. The chances to mankind wiping itself out with nuclear warfare by then must be highly more probable.

Hahaha That'd be so ironic if it actually did strike on Friday the 13th (April 13th) hahaha I'd die laughing... or if I got hit by the meteor. Either way, I'd surely die.

i don't want to be skeptical here, but even if the astoroid did come directly at earth, i doubt anyone could be able to do anything about it. if it is only going to effect a region, probably the best case of action is to calculate where it is going to hit and evacuate that area. good luck doing that though

That won't happen if Bush is in office.
See Hurricane Katrina.

Yeah I do have an obsesion with space cause i just wanna go join NASA when i get out of school that is why i mostly talk about space. Also i dont want the planet destroyed that would really suck right.

it's just a strange thig to think about, being sitting in your living room, or w/e, and then bam, your gone, small but possible chance, just strange to think about...

the other opption is to summon up the life stream to fend off the meteor:D HAHA

:D hehe, i guess the last option would be to summon up the life stream to fend off the meteor, hehehe

Well, hate to break this to you all, but according to the Mayans, the universe is scheduled for destruction on December 23rd, 2012.
Yes i have heard that but it is acctualy wrong and once i find the link i will post it.According to scientist they have proved that the Dec 23rd astroid is actually wrong.

Yeah, cuz we all know Bush sat at his desk grinning when Katrina struck...

For real, the President of the U.S. doesn't have it out for a set of people or whatever the inuendo here is stating. What was he supposed to do? Help came. Maybe if some of hoodlums down there weren't looting, killing, and shooting at Helecopters, people wouldn't have been so reluctant in sending help in there. The innocent were harmed by the acts of the guilty.

As for this asteroid...it won't hit us. That'd be a boring way to go out...

Yes, I'm sure the key factor to the ultimate fate of this universe is based on how exciting it will be right before it all goes black.

Hm i dont know what to think about this,if it will be happen i just hope it will be quick, but something tells me that everythink will be just fine.I dont know why there where many before and never hit us,so ithink they will find a way to do somethink about it.But i must tell you i dont realy believe it.
