NO POLITICS. NO FLAMES. JUST MORALS. I WANT THIS TO BE A DISCUSSION.

Sorry for the caps lock and size abuse.

Anyway, if the title doesn't make itself apparent, I'm just curious what you all think about animal testing and what should be done about it. Personally, I am completely for animal testing if it is done to save human lives. However, the disgusting people who smother rabbit's eyes with shampoo to make sure that it'll blind them is completely wrong in my opinion. I'll just leave it at that, simply because I don't want to write an essay for you to read just so you can understand the topic.

But I'll ask again, what do you think? <!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_10987222-->

I am in the same boat as you, SephirothAlpha. It is okay to shampoo a rat just to see if the fur is left all nice and shiny, but it is totaly different to make it go blind. That, my friend, is cruelty to animals. Here in the states we actually have a law that says you could go to jail if you get caught mistreating animals. I think that they have to be domesticated or something. I don't know. Don't get me to lying to ya. But there is a law.

Yeah we have a law in the UK as well, but I bet loop holes exist in the law that say certain people can harm animals if it is for medical purposes.

I am quite strongly against animal testing, though I do accept that it can help to save lives... But it just doesnt seem fair on creatures which seem to have no freewill or choice in the matter. I think it's ridiculous to test make-up and stuff on animals.

So you think it should be tested on humans instead?

I don't know... I don't really have a solution, so I guess I can't really diss it too much...

Yeah, I'm sort of split on this one. On the one hand, I really love animals. I don't think products should ever be tested on animals. However, in the case of medical research (AIDS, cancer, etc), I think animal testing is okay. That sort of research can potentially save millions of lives. It's sort of unfortunate that the animals have to suffer :/ But even in medical testing, I don't think animal testing should be taken too lightly. It is essentially torturing/killing a living thing, so it should be reserved for very serious medical research.

I hate how PETA is completely against ANY medical animal testing. Yes, animal rights are important, but finding a cure for an illness like cancer is much more important (at least to me).

Why not test it on humans (I'm one of those damn tree hugging hippies everybody hates) You know animals have feelings to, and their lives are just as important as ours, we are all equal under the Sun, no matter the circumstances, we just happened to be more evolved. If you want to test something, get someone willing to do it, other than getting a poor animal with no say on the topic, and harming it. Even if it is just shampooing, your scaring the poor animal to death. They're probably thinking 'What the hell are these ugly creatures doing?" and they are right, we humans are disgusting, vile creatures only wanting what we want, we don't care how many lives are lost (animal lives) as long as what we want. I don't really care if it is for medical reasons, no matter the outcome, the animal will be deeply affected by it. No matter the organism, we should cherish the life no matter what! (I may go on like this another couple of posts later)

So you think it should be tested on humans instead?

I, my friend, say yes! we should find someone willing to go under the testing

What makes you say that humans are better than animals? Is it that we are more evolved?

Remember those tests on human around a year ago that had disasterous results, I think only one guy survived and he was serverely deformed.

I'm completely against it. That's so fucked up. How would you like it if you were an innocent little rabbit, just kicking back, eating some carrots...mindin' your bui'ness...and suddenly you're nabbed from paradise and thrown into a lab where you sleep in a confined area day in and day out, and you get injected with needles and smeared in places with substances that don't belong on your body...

That's just so messed up...
I don't care if it's to "save lives". Humans are "supposed" to be intelligent creatures. Find another method for testing.

Nabbed from paradise, Rhea I find that so funny. Rabbits have to escape all sorts of preditors on a daily basis, sleep in the coldest conditions and probably rarely eat carrots and are starving most of the time, hardly a description of paradise. But when captured they have free meals, warm beds - surely that is worth a little bit of chemical testing each day.

What about those animals, they died. No matter what you say, those animals died! I'd much rather be deformed for the rest of my life then have animals dying because of human interference.

I 100% agree with you, but animals are also intelligent, or please define your definition of 'intelligent'. animals use their intelligence to survive, eat, drink, sleep.

Since that chemical testing will most likely kill them, yeah! And those rabbits aren't starving, in the wildlife, they are happy, but wild animals don't like being held captive by strange, big creatures. The chemical testing would torture them for days, weeks, months. Every day, searing pain, but being eaten, not only is it natural, it's most of the time quick. And it's helping out other aniamls.

I mean...if people are so intelligent, then we can surely find a different means of product testing.

I know that animals face predators in nature. But didn't you watch the Lion King? It's called the circle of life. Not the circle of analy raping animals with chemical products. o.0
It's just not right to pluck a defenseless critter out of nature, whether you THINK the animal may want it or not.

I'm all against testing that will kill or harm an animal for pointless reasons such as new make-up or shampoo, but to save human lifes, I'm all up for that.

In that human testing most of the people who tested the new drug died, only one was deformed. You would rather humans die than rabbits?

I think it's probably better to test on humans...as long as they consent of course, and get lotsa money for it! I'm not sure there would be many people who would want to be tested on of their own free will though. But I think its unfair to test things on animals which have no say in the matter, no choice.

Then start posting because to regard animal life more important than human life is bizarre.

Would you actually choose a rabbit over a human in a different circumstance, say you could only save one?

That first sentence of yours, is saying that Human life is more imprtant, so rabbits must be ex-term-in-ated!(dalek voice)

To answer your question, we murder them, just to get what we want, we are selfish. It's not like the little Rabbit can come to the next APEC meeting and say 'Stop hurting us' so, it's people like me that have to talk for the creatures, great and small

Same question back at ya? why would you save a human over a rabbit?
My answer is that the human can talk, and the rabbit can't, so scientists think that they can just do stuff to it

I'd save the human. We are top of the food chain therefore the more dominant species on the planet. Like Rhea said the circle of life and we are top of the circle.

Tell me are you vegetarian?

Of course... but as the dominant species, we have a responsibility to the other lifeforms on this planet. Just because we can test on animals doesn't mean we should. And, yes many people would save a human rather than a rabbit, but thats not what we're talking about. We're talking about whether animal testing is the right thing to do.

And sorry if that sounded like I was being bitchy...I'm in a quite bad mood today...got a helluva cold and only got 1 hours sleep last night :(

This is in answer to Sephirothalpha
so what if i am?! six weeks and still god damn strong! have you got a thing against vegetarians?

Yes, we are the top of the food chain, but strip us down of our technology and advances, what do we have, two arms and legs, nothing compared to a lion or tiger. (keep in mind, we aren't using a spear, or any other weapon)
Like I said before, someone has to speak up for the little guy

Then somethings going around, coz I got it too. the cold, not the bitchyness
