I read an article on OXM a couple weeks ago and one article asked gamers whether they preferred choosing paths that are inherently evil or those that are inherently good. Games such as Fable II and Fallout 3 continually bring this up.

Do you find that you always pick 'slap the girl' or 'kill the unarmed terrorist'? Or do you go the opposite way and 'save the dying kid'?

Personally I choose the good guy path 'cause I always ask myself whether that's what I would do if I were actually the main character. I never pick the evil path simply because I can't stand to do bad things to people in real life myself.

What about you guys?

I always take the path of the righteous. Not sure why but I always do.

What I find more interesting about this entire topic is how I always feel obligated to be either one or the other. I don't think the system really ever intended for people to be either completely good or entirely evil... but that's the way it always seems to turn out. I feel guilty if I'm playing as a good player but I do something bad. I'd much rather have these sort of things incorporated into the game without really having any effect on the outcome of situations... but still affecting the way those situations occur.

For example, in Mass Effect, it really makes no difference at all if you're good or bad. However, for every circumstance, NPCs will treat you differently based on your prior choices. It's a good way to do it, I think. I just hate being either all or nothing... with no inbetween.

I usually pick the good part. But sometimes it is just plain fun to play 'evil'. I love games like Fable that give you some many different options to either kill this person or save said person. I would love to see more games implement more systems like this. Especially ones that judge your appearance, how people react to you, and so on and so forth.

Evil all the way! If possible I always prefer to lie, cheat, murder, and steal my way through the game. The main reason for this, is that it is after all a game. Impulses of kindless are much easier to express in real life without repurcussions than impulses of hate. Therefore I find it much more entertaining and rewarding to be a villain.
