Interesting topic. Many people debate whether or not that Prison does it's job properly. It, allegedly, does not make some reform and is only a set-back in a person's long line of crime.

So, my question: what kinds of alternative punishments do you think should be given to criminals, instead of serving a prison sentence?

To make your view clear, try to give examples of a crime then give an alternative punishment.

My favourite one: Rapists should be castrated.

As this is the debate forum, feel free to take anothers point and say why it might not prove effective, or otherwise.

i think they should make peoplle that make too much crimes should be thown in to some slums where people fight other food and take lots of care or their money so if he/she steals, they would gang up on he/she. (i dont have the most creative ideas...)

My favourite one: Rapists should be castrated.

what does castrated mean ?

Well, theres always the death sentence, but i disagree with that.
I think they should be sent to re-education camp but that dosen't work very well. Some of my other ideas include, supervised community work, dirty jobs but most of those are already used. Prison really dosen't work because it could work like school, you go there to meet up with your friends and such things. I really haven't got any alternative ideas but I would really like to think that putting them in a room where they watch teletubbies and listen to annoying music is a good idea ;)

Well really there is far to much controversy these days about alternative punishments. The death sentence is under scrutiny constantly as there is no way of altering the consequences if the accused turns out to be innocent and all that jazz. What really annoys me though is when someone is given the life-imprisonment sentence and they are only kept in for some part of that time. Fair enough if they win an appeal and get proven innocent. I do believe is prison needs to return to what it was....I mean sky tv and cable...i dnt have that, yet there are murderers and rapists sitting watching it quite happily from the comfort of their prison cell....its an easier life than outside...no real worries for them.

I am a retributionist, so, in the case of murderers, no question. But such a sentence should only be wreaked upon those whose crime has been ABSOLUTELY PROVED WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF MISTAKE. Otherwise, confinement till the establishment of innocence will have to suffice.

I do not see any flaws in the castration of rapists. For all serious offences downward from that level of malfeasance, I really do not see any solution save for prison.

However, in the case of various petty criminal acts, fines are overused. Sorry, but paying a little sum does not effectively deter one from committing the act again.

In those cases, I think the use of house arrest should rise in popularity.

But that is really all I have to say, though I am not so innovative.

Removing something so that they could not rape anymore. (
Their man-hood would be removed
).
I agree wholeheartedly If you rape someone you deserve to be castrated... Only one problem, Guys aren't the only rapists. It's not very common for their to be a girl rapist, but it has and forever will happen.

It is incredibly rare for there to be female on male rape, according to the studies. However, physically unalterable punishments kind of rub me the wrong way due to the deficits in all legal systems. That's why I'm basically against the death penalty as well as this proposal.

Now, if there was a way to commit a person to atone for their crimes . . . that would be good. Sticking a person in a big time-out box for an extended period doesn't really seem like a solution as much as just something to do to them that's not so cruel as some alternatives. However, if there was a way that criminals could somehow rebuild the societal damage they caused it would be better than what we have now. A lifetime of service work for white-collar criminals or something like that. My creativity is kind of dead right now . . . the work week went on too long.

Some of you young'ns should be able to help out!

One major problem with alternative punishments is that our justice system is sometimes wrong. I don't have a number but in the US, there have been many people that have been executed under the death penalty, only to be found innocent years later by DNA evidence.

With prison, if the person is later proven innocent, he/she can be released without too much of a problem. If a rapist, lets say, is castrated and then proven innocent later, what do you do then?

It's not a bad idea, but I think there are just too many flaws in our justice system to have any alternative punishments.

Not only must we consider the fact that prison's are over-crowded, we also have to think about the youth of today.

Just on Tuesday there, I reported a boy who get's on my public bus (don't get me started on the steengy coucil :P) and the Police visited and took a statement. He told us that the boy was well known around the area, but was only 15, so could only technically receive cautions. "I can wait till his sixteenth ... it'll be like MY birthday", he said :P

Is it not terrible that a child with charges as long as his arm, can walk away Scot-free? My mum asked him the question, "What else CAN you do with such a person?"

He replied "I don't know, but if you do it, do it when no one is looking ;)"

Just my kind of officer :)

Reading that has made my day. I wish there were more common sense police officers about like that one.

The way I see it, these little s***s know they can do whatever they like and get away with it because a) the law can barely touch them when they're 15 and under, b) prisons are overcrowded so they're less likely to be banged up, c) ASBOs (Anti Social Behaviour Orders for you folks across the pond) are like merit badges only a hundred times cooler, and d) even if they were imprisoned they'd learn how to lead a life of crime from the other inmates (when not playing their XBOX 360s) and, when released, enjoy the reputation of a 'bad boy' which is glamourised by these idiot rappers.

Alternative punishments? Something like the chain gangs you see in the US. Something really demeaning. These little punks need to learn some respect for other people and it's not going to happen by "showing them love". I'd drop that attitude before the next election Mr. Cameron or our next prime minister might just be a Lib Dem.

I'm getting out of this f*****g country.

Although the past was strict, it was effective in my opinion. In reference to the Code of Hammurabi - an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Fair enough, yeah? However, people do make a point about the reliability of the system. I understand how the innocent could be tragically punished, and there'd be no turning back. So as Ximruccilim and others have said earlier, alternative punishments really can't be put into play unless it was absolutely certain that the charged is truly the guilty one, beyond all reasonable doubt. Achieve that security though, and I'd definitely take that over the prison system, which is sort of like detention. Some kids in my school actually enjoy getting detention, can you believe it? There are certainly deep flaws with that:
