I sat at the patio stairs, thinking about Erin as the pint of gin slowly poured into me. It has been a month since our break-up, so now my days go in the same fashion as it is now: fermented and alone, finding refuge in my own mind.
The winter was frigid enough to account for my lack of social endeavors. Instead, I choose to sit here every night, watching the snow drizzle in the air. It made the alcohol taste better somehow, watching the ground get whiter as my stomach got warmer. The cool, crisp air and the quiet night atmosphere completed the feeling_ this was my refuge from regret.
I started to feel the deep caress of the gin- when your hearing slightly fades and the air around you gets heavy. This was my goal of the day, to be at peace. Others see it as...it doesn't matter,
I call it therapy.
As I was getting through the second half of the bottle, I noticed an owl perched on the dormant tree that lied near the house. It was still and perceptive as if it was relishing the night as I was. Suddenly, I felt secure in my thoughts as I looked up into the dark sky.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my cigarettes. I had taken smoking up again after the incident with my ex-fiance, which is something I would regret if I wasn't so stressed. I put the cigarette to my lips and realized right then that my lighter was inside. I searched my pockets anyways, just to be thorough, as I stood up and headed toward the door.
Suddenly, as I had just gotten my hand on the doorknob, I heard someone call my name. It was very faint, so I opened the door as if, by some impossible chance, they were calling from inside. Then they called again, this time louder. The voice was coming from the front of the house.
I wrapped around the side of the house, following the direction of whoever was calling. The voice was very familiar- was it, Erin? I walked through the yard and saw a figure across the street, waving and calling for me. It was Erin. I immediately felt odd about it as I sped up and called back to her, "Erin? What's going on?"
"Just come here, I have to tell you something_", she said back to me as I had gotten to the road.
But right as I was halfway, she started to fade away. As she did, she pointed down the road. I paused and then looked to the left of me as lights burned into my eyes. I flinched heavily, startled by the halting of a car and blinded by the headlights.
Then I heard the door fly open.
"Hey, what are you doing in the middle of the street? I could've hit you!" The driver was more shocked than I was_
"I'm sorry, I was just going to talk to her and.."
"Talk to who?", she repied.
"She's.." I stopped and looked up. Noone was there. I stood confused for a second, and then approached the driver.
I stepped forward, being lured in by something as familiar as it was nameless. As I did, the driver responded,
"Well, it's really cold out. Let's just forget about it and go inside. I have some things I need to tell you."
It was Erin.
