Final Fantasy VIII, X and XII all had 6 main characters whereas IV, VI, VII, IX have quite a few more. V had 4 and I havent played I-III.

So which do you prefer? With 6 characters it can be easier to develop the characters and fill out their back story but when there is more its more likely that there'll be one you really like, and there is more of a unified group feel to your party of characters.

Personally I prefer it when there are a large amount of characters as in VI, VII and IX. Theres just not as many options when theres only 6 characters. Also, if you compare the interestng characters in VII and IX to the mostly boring ones in XII (in my opinion) you can see that less characters doesn't always mean more well rounded ones.

Final Fantasy X had 7 and I'm sure Final Fantasy V had 5. FFI you just had the 4 aswell as FFII you had quite a few but Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon were the main ones. In FFIII (DS) you got 4. Anyway, I would say more than 6 because I like having a variety of different characters to choose from although in FFXII maybe 6 characters was the right amount. I would like to see about 9/10 in FFXIII though.

I also liked it when on your travels you met a couple of people along the way instead of meeting everyone before the game has really kicked off. FFVIII you basically met everyone except for Irvine before your first mission as a SeeD but Rinoa joining later. FFX, by the time you were leaving Besaid you had came accross everyone although Auron and Rikku wouldn't join right away, but you still joined them in battle before. In FFXII You met everyone before you got out of the Barheim Passage. It makes sense to meet quite a few characters at the beginning but would also be nice to meet a few more on your journey like IV, VI, VII and IX.

Well the only case in which I only saw 6 characters was in FFVIII, and it personally annoyed me that there weren't quite enough options.
I love variety; not only in abilities, but also in personality. ^_^

Even the super annoying characters that don't really make any sense; you grow to like them. ^_^

And one more thing...
Hidden characters just make the game that much more worth while. <3

I don't think it really matters as long as the characters have a part in the story and are useful in some way. It is kind of nice to have a wider selection though so you can choose to use the characters that you like and don't get suck using someone annoying.

Too many characters is aggitating.
Take chrono cross for example; I think that game has over 40 playable characters. o_O They all intertwine into the plot, however...with too many characters, it's hard to really appreciate each character's existance.

I know, 40 characters is a wacky example, especially since no FF usually HAS that many characters. o_O

I also feel the same way about villains.
I hate jumping from bad guy to bad guy. I mean, boss battles are fun...but I really dislike it when the main villain changes on a frequent basis.

I probably wouldn't mind if they played a bigger role if you got them instead of additional roles. Also included extra cutscenes as in FFVII there was a few that left out Vincent and Yuffie because they were hidden characters.

I know. But FFVII really did a good job intertwining Yuffie and Vincent into the plot. I wish the game had been 100% completed so maybe they could have been incorperated into the cutscenes. =[

I do prefer more than 6 characters. I'm very picky when it comes to characters I like, and most likely I only like 1-2 out of 6 characters which makes it difficult to form a party that I actually like to use, so more characters means I'll most likely have a party of characters whom I actually all like

FFVII was the only game that had an entire cast of likeable characters. Even the badguys.

FFVIII had the most horrible cast I've ever seen. I pursuaded myself to like Zell, but that's it.

FFVII had a likeable cast? LOL. Unlikely. Not everyone sucked, but the vast majority of characters receive too much praise.

FFVI was a twat for extra characters. Some of them proved to be a bit useless.

I sort of have a "Warcraft" mentality when it comes to this. It's hard for me to believe in an FF game that only a few dozen people live in each town, NOBODY else is capable of any form of fighting, and when we're supposed to "aid" the local army of militia, they give us no fighting support whatsoever. I'd like a party of 6-12, but when we're part of a bigger army, I want to be able to control hundreds of characters at the same time. Of course, you would have to remove the turn based system to keep it practical, but is there really anything wrong with that?

Going by what I've played I tend to prefer the game where there's been more than 6 characters. Especially if there's no customisation for characters and their skills have been set. The more characters then the more variety in that case. Even if some of the side-characters feel under-developed or whatever it's not as if the can't bring anything to the party.

I like having a good number of characters like in FFVII but i only end up leveling up three or four of them because they end up being my favorites. I liked how in XII you could use all of your characters in the same battle and I liked all those characters and i had to level up each of them. So i say stick with 6...3 guys and 3 girls...and make it to where you can use all of them in the same battle again.

i prefer more than 6 characters - this adds to the Diversaty and spreads the abilitys around fairly. VII and X have the perfect amount of Characters IMO VI was waaaay too much - but still fun - and 4 characters only is boring XD

so VII and X are a happy medium, more than 6 but less than 10

I think its very important to build a back story and develop the characters there are. VI had too many, but if they had sidequests and the like that gave more insight into each character a bit more I think it would have been fine.

Anything less than 6 is horrble. 6 I think is still too low. FFXII only seemed like it had a few characters and it wasn't really all that appealing IMO. FFX with 7 was alright, and FFIX with around 7 or 8 seemed perfect. Gave you a great mix and match opportunity so you can experiment a bit more between battle styles and strategies.

However, a game should never have as many characters as FFVI had....that was crazy!

I agree FFVI's extras sucked. o_O

I never once used Umaru, and...Gogo proved to be useless in hard battles.
