You can rent movies, CDs, but you can't rent video games in Japan. That is part of the reason why the used games market is so big in that part of the world. The Japanese would beat the game so quickly and sell the game back to retailers for quick cash.
Dragon Quest X will be the first game in over 20 years that you can legally rent in Japan. Square Enix and Tsutaya, a chain of DVD/CD/game stores in Japan, will rent Dragon Quest X for eight days and seven nights – for free. The rental version also includes a code to play Dragon Quest X online.
Here is how it will work, you rent the game for the rental period and when you go and return it, you will then have the option of buying the copy for 3,800 yen($46). The game will retail for 6,980 yen($85). Saved data from the rental version will carry over into the full version.
