I just replayed this a month ago and don't hate it at all! The job system/customization options keep each playthrough fresh and exciting. There's plenty of humor too!
As you enter Zozo, proceed forward passed the first tower and look for some boxes at the bottom/bottom left of the screen. You can go through those into the largest tower in the town. From there, it's a straight shot to the area you need to get to. You'll jump towers twice along the way, so...
That tunnel/linear sense of the game never broke for me, but I'm the type of gamer that will finish a game regardless (especially an FF game).
Chapter 11's openness does create some freshness (as well as some sudden gameovers if you're not careful) that may be enough to push you to the end...
I used Fang/Light/Snow - swapping in Vanille for certain hunts/farming. I customized Light and Snow for Ruin spam while COMs and spell spam while RAVs. It worked pretty well.
I'm in between love and hate. I don't hate the game (it's Final Fantasy!), but it is not one of my top picks either.

FF3 - not managing my healing well in the final dungeon.
FF6 - leaving an esper on Shadow when departing Zozo, Kefka's tower with 5-6 decent players, reflecting off the wrong characters (damn tower), lack of prep before Doma's dream sequence, forgetting to re-equip between party swaps
FF7 -...
I have a picture of me playing FF2 (FF4 SNES version) when I was 3 or 4 years old. My parents let me rent it from a local game store. I can remember dying a lot and not progressing very far, but someone had left a save at the end of the game that I could load up and play. I was determined to...
