I think Garland made Zidane immortal... or at least that's the impression that I got from him saying that Kuja was just a sort of mortal prototype and that he created Zidane to be Kuja's successor. I'm not completely sure, though.

I'm positive that you don't need to get "Save the Queen" to see that scene with Beatrix saying that she's leaving. I didn't get any of the alternate ending items and saw that.
