Luna and Tarhe are two main characters. You switch continuously with them as the game progresses. At the start, you pick a class for Luna and Tarhe. (The classics: Warrior, Archer, Black Mage, White Mage.) And yes, CUSTOMIZATION! But the classes aren't really mentioned. Maybe it could be talking...

Meh, I got over the ROMs, deleted them all. FF right now is my master. Let's say there's this awesome fantasy game in front of me. And then next to it, there's an FF game (Comp. or PS2). Instantly, I know the FF game will be better. Yah, my gamemasters change, but I think FF is mine right now.
