I would recommend FFVIII, but that's a very biased response considering that is one of my top 3 games. I loved the story, the setting, the characters, everything. It's a good game, I could never get bored of it.

Yuna! Mostly because I wanted my Aeons to be powerful for when it got to end-game stuff. Plus, I found her very useful as being the 'white mage' of the party. :) She was essential for healing and esuna etc. So she kind of always got the main seat, so she was first to get around the Sphere grid. :)

I used the Standard one on my first playthrough, then on all my other playthroughs I used the expert grid. I preferred the expert grid, definitely a lot more freedom.

I liked Rinoa for about... 5 mins of the game. I really dislike her. What is she? She never really fits in. She's always awkwardly left out. She's annoying, whiny, moaning all the time, a flirt... She just annoyed me to no end.
