I would suggest that Bioware are a very, very good alternative to JRPGs. As if KOTOR wasn't good enough, then they hit us with Mass Effect. Not RPGs in the truest sense, more RPG-meets-FPS, but still, incredible games.
As much as I enjoyed IX and X, for me VII and VIII are the pinnacle of the series. Kitase directing, Nomura and Naora providing the art, Nojima, Kitase and Nomura on writing credits, and Uematsu composing the soundtrack. As soon as they started tinkering with that winning formula things started...
I think that's more plausible as well but I can't see why she wouldn't be able to cast 'life' - any of the playable characters can bring people back from the dead with 'life' and I'd imagine that Edea's far more powerful than any of them at that point of the story.
Considering that Edea was a sorceress, and she wanted information out of Squall, I think it's fairly obvious that she'd have brought him back with 'life'. Don't think we necessarily needed that spoon-feeding to us did we?
Near the end of disc 3 on VIII now. Spent a few hours collecting the elements to get Squall's Lion Heart blade. Got my @$$ handed to me few times by ruby dragons as I tried to get some energy crystals. Ended up going to Esthar instead and getting them from there.
To be honest, I used to think that I was a big fan of JRPGs.
After playing many non-FF games though I've discovered that I'm just a fan of the FF series.
I've played Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Enchanted Arms and Star Ocean, and whilst I've enjoyed some of them...
Seifer = misguided (plus, played like a puppet later into the game)
Seifer show's his true colours in the closing animation. That seemed to rule him out as a bonafide villain, IMO.
VIII's got a fantastic story IMO. Probably my favourite story of any of the FFs. I think it's the second disc, particularly towards the end of the disc, where it really starts picking up pace.
FFFVIII - at the Centra Ruins
And there's actually two examples here I can use! :D
First - Using the strategy guide, I took on Odin. According to the guide, I didn't need to worry about his attacks as he was fairly ambivalent - just wait for the clock to count down to zero and then Odin agrees...
Whilst I agree that the overall quality of the series has been in decline from X onwards, I've still found something that I've enjoyed about all of the games (bar XI, and I won't even touch XIV).
The biggest deviation from the tried and trusted format, is XIII, and there are even bits of that...
For fantasy-based anime, I prefer El-Hazard to be honest. I just couldn't really get into FFU at all.
Didn't help that when I watched it, it hadn't been long since I'd watched Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, which I consider to be outstanding anime. :D
One of the reasons I bought a PS3 was for the FF franchise games. I already knew that XIII was going to be multi, but still wanted to safeguard against missing out on future releases.
Plus, PS3 FFXIII > 360 FFXIII :)
As others have mentioned, the end of X, and Aerith's death are probably on everyone's list.
Beyond that, I'd have to echo the mentions from VIII - there are so many in that game that I really thought were superb.
I don't think I could stand being around anyone that 'hated' FF! :D
Although having said that, I suspect that most of them wouldn't have a clue what you were on about if you asked them about it!
4 for me;
1) Aerith's death - utterly jaw-dropping
2) Rinoa & Squall's waltz scene - beautiful for a psx game
3) The end sequence and closing credits of VIII - lovely soundtrack and the camcorder ending was genius
4) Practically ANY of the FFXIII cutscenes - whilst the merits of the overall...
