Well, characters in the back row only take half damage or so from physical attacks, but they do half damage with melee weapons. (Swords, axes, spears ect.) They do normal damage with ranged weapons, like the bow, and magic.

I'd make a complicated maze enclosed by a ceiling that opens up into a large open area. Sometimes a roulette wheel would show up and if a character attacks it the stage changes to the element on the roulette wheel (fire, ice, lightning, light, dark ect.) then the wheel dissapears. Best stage ever.
