As far as I'm concerned, 7's original story had a lot of gaps in it, but for nostalgic reasons it gets my vote, same with 8. But as far as actual plot goes, X is by far the best game storyline wise. VI had an excellent story, and I cant remember the story from games earlier than that anymore...
