Optional bosses aside, I struggled with the demon wall in FFIV, the one that chases you out of the Sealed Cave. Part of it was pride I guess; I did not want to have to throw my Hell Winds. In the end I got it, but it was tough watching that thing inch closer to my people every few seconds...
I think I too was around 30 (of course I was playing on the old NES). Bravo for wanting to be original, but do not be too proud to just use the Dragoon method; I would not consider it cheesing as it has plot support (The whole town of Dragoons thing) and he is darn tough otherwise. Good luck!
