Really? But most side routes are locked anyway. I used that as a basis of knowing which way it's best to go. If it's locked, means it's not the main route. So I just kept going with each character until I reached the ending of the character's grid, which is the Lvl3 lock.

I think it depends on how powerful is the enemy. For tough bosses I think you need to pay more, because with thousands of gil he doesn't cast it on them, but with merely 1 or 2 thousand he easily beheads the simple monsters.
