mabie have a section you can ONLY post in if you have under 100 posts.. or aslong as you havnt been at the site for more than a month or something.. so that when new members join, if we have it near the top of the forum. they will feel kinda like "cool, they care for new members" and there could be stickys, with admin/mod bois ect that they can get a look at, and a msn/yahoo contact list sticky, and stuf like that, just trying to keep the newbs around ?

Um, I don't think this will work. xD I mean I see your point but this will only add a new forum and we're trying to keep it low on that already. I really doubt the newbies will form their own niche in that one forum. If they want to be active, they will be. If not, then I'm sure they have their reasons for it. One forum dedicated for them isn't going to keep the newbies around...it's a matter of whether they can really be bothered to stick around and get familiar with the site and everyone, among other things, but you get the picture.

It's a great idea I just don't think it'll work, forums dedicated to certain usergroups don't really work, as seen in the Vet lounge, it's nice to have it there but it's only really posted in now and again. So to me it's a good idea having a forum for new members, but on the practical side I don't think it'll work.

Not a good idea.

I come from a forum where this has been applied. (You need 25 posts to access Members Area; to download soundtracks, renders, videos etc.) The outcome isn't so great; new members will just spam their way around, flood forums with topics asking where is the Members Area, etc. Only to leave the forum soon after they were happy with the downloads.

You can tell that some new members already spam their way around just to access the RPG, you wouldn't want more reasons for them to spam their way through.

Well there's this;

And besides, if it does work and newbies become active, then they'll soon exceed the 100 posts or whatever and won't be able to post in it anymore. >_>

yeah.. i only reason i thought o it is because they wont feel intimidated by the older members joking n shiz, and they will be able to becombe accustomed to the website with other new members, and make it easyer for each other, and once they have exeded 100 posts and cant anymore, they will be more accustomed to the older members, and be more "addicted" to the site and stay anyways, instead of joining and being scared away in a sence lol

Newer members becoming intimidated by older ones? LOL. I don't think newer members are attracted to this site simply for it's members, rather for the informational content of this site.

no, but whenthey come and see all the members that are already friends, making jokes n shiz, having a laugh, i bet they feel pretty imtimidated about joining in convos n shiz, and posting when they dont know anyone n shit like that

i dont think newbies feel intimidated :/ iv just recently joined and compared to other forums i go on, the people here are really nice ^_^
I think your idea is nice and could work in smaller forums, but it has its issues as other people have mentioned - especially as this forum is quite large.
perhaps, like you suggested, its about socialising. in which case, rather than dedicating a whole section to newbies you could introduce Visitor messaging (such as on Khinsider forums). a lot of people use it there, and i have to say its one of the things that keeps me on there so much.

As they should, very few people will be accepted immediately, and if you try to join into someone's conversation you'll probably annoy them.
People don't have a prejudice against new members, it's just that so often that they're n00bs. I don't think having a forum specifically for new members would actually change anything. Plus like Jane says, they'd soon not be able to post in there.

yeah and by the time they couldnt they would be addapt to posting other places, and the sb n that, where did i read it on this forum, someone saying they didnt go in the sb until they left the site and came back a year later, coz they felt "scared" coz everyone knew everyone ect n they didnt

Personally I don't think the idea would work. Mainly because it is essentially cutting off the new members from the older ones. If new members were given a forum of their own, I think the result would probably be the opposite of its intended purpose. New members are only going to feel accepted if they interact with other members. It's not so much that your idea would prevent them interacting with older members, but I don't really think it would change anything, so I can't really see the point.

Youd be reffering to me, i never went on the sb cuz i only really spoke to maybe 3 members and the probability of being ignored was high, but also not knowing any of these people i had absolutely nothing to say to them either, so it was reluctance to interact on my part mainly.
That bein said though i didnt come here to make friends, i came here to read on topics about FF and voice my own thoughts and opinions. Personally a small forum for new members to get aquainted wouldnt have interested me at all, i never planned on really talking to anyone, i never even made a welcome thread. Nice idea but unnecesary in my eyes. There are members here from years ago who still post but never talk on the sb.
So really if they wanna stick around they will, if they wanna interact they will, regardless of whats there to help them make 'friends'

well....might aswel close this then, seeing as it seems to be a resounding no :wacky:
