Is anyone going to try fasting for Ramadan this year? A friend of mine brought it up about a month ago, and I'd never done it before, so I figured I'd try. Ramadan starts either sunset today or tomorrow. The tradition is to refrain from eating, drinking, and sexual relations from dawn to sundown according to wikipedia. I can't say that it'll be particularly fun, but it will be an interesting experience.

Are you just trying this out of curiosity? I'm kinda curious about it, now that you bring it up. From what i remember from my religion class, you can drink only water through the day if needed, but nothing else. If that's the case, i think it could be done.

But man, sunsets around here are at like 8:30. still, good luck with your attempt.

Yeah, I'm just doing this out of curiosity. I'll probably just do it this one time for the experience. Since it's so hot outside, I may drink water during the day if I really need to. And, yeah. Day is really long this time of year. I'll have to get up before the sun rises if I want to have breakfast. Honestly, it's more like having an early breakfast, skipping lunch, and having a late-ish dinner if you think about it.

It depends how strict you are about it. We have a player on our football team who is Muslim, and he won't drink water until sundown. A bit concerning when it's 100 degrees out, and he's sweating profusely at practice.

I will not be participating as I personally don't see the point of denying oneself something based on religious reasons. But I respect anyone who is so inclined.

I heard you are allowed to eat a grape fruit during ramadan. I saw it on "All American Muslims", a highschool football team needed to stay active so the coach allowed them to have some kind of fruit to eat to replace lost energy and all that.

I gave up stuff for Lent, so I'm gonna skip on the whole Ramadan fasting. lol. But good luck to you if you want to go for it.

Don't really understand the point in it. I respect those who fast for charities but never saw the appeal or necessity for Ramadan.

i really don't see how fasting like this can be good for you spiritually or physically. maybe it's just because i'm not religious in any way, but logic should tell people that not eating or drinking through the daylight hours is a really bad idea

Actually the only thing bad about it is if you do not drink water. Otherwise it is perfectly healthy and fine to not eat a meal for an entire day. It's not even an entire day, it's just sunrise to sunset.

Also, I am not participating in this because I love food too much and do not care for anything religious.

i know, but you can eat after sunset. surely it would be really bad practice to starve yourself through the daytime and then have food through the night.

It isn't the healthiest thing, no. I guess I really want to test how much self control I have. It's actually quite difficult. I had a couple glasses of wine and a couple crackers today before I caught myself. I didn't even think about it. I'll just have to be more aware of what I'm doing.

Yep. I'm fastin' in a couple of hours. We gotta pray at the consistent times from morning, midday, afternoon and twilight in an event called 'iftar', the breaking of the fast. You either eat dates or whatever's right infront of you surrounded by family or friends.


There's a ton of things one must be absolved of too like:

-smoking
-watching porn
-swearing
-discussing taboo topics


Been ready for a while now myself

No porn and swearing? This will be a bit more difficult.
