Prometheus

Finally saw it.

It seemed like one of those movies that tries to be deep and poignant on religious and human conditional issues, but wound up being somewhat superficial & cliche. The execution and visual effects are superb. The story and plot seemed frail and transparent at times.

Not sure what to think about it... really.

Chris and I watched this last night. It was well made and the art direction was absolutely fantastic - such attention to detail - but there were far too many plot holes! =( Perhaps some are just because I lack knowledge about Alien and the series, but here are some I can think of...

• Why does the 'engineer' drink the contaminated liquid at the beginning? Is it a sacrifice; does he know he's doing to die by being eaten from the inside? Is he toasting to the ship's successful journey?
• What happens to the alien ship which takes off at the beginning of the movie?
• Of the two men who get left behind on the planet, and are then attacked by face-suckers (phallic imagery, btw?!), one returns to the ship as a super-human. I thought the face-suckers merely planted a seed inside men, or else killed them. This man was instead possessed.
• Why did Shaw go off with the robot at the end? He was responsible to what happened to her lover and attempted to let her pregnancy advance. Why did she choose to trust him after this?

There were some clichés too, such as the 'father' moment.

It was perfectly enjoyable, but there were some unanswered questions.

Me and the lass (who has NEVER seen ANY of the Alien films, the fuck!?) caught it on Wednesday. It was well done but I expected more and the story was a little thin. Apparently there will be another film that helps fill the holes this first one has created and ties more into Alien.

I totally buy the large, squid-like, Face-hugger at the end. Makes sense. The first Face-hugger, born from a human (and alien-modified genetics from the guy), injects an embryo into an Engineer to produce the first Xenomorph we all are more familiar with.

Watched some of the Alien series, can't say I know much about it.

I really enjoyed the film though. I had no idea it was going to be sort of related to Alien. A lot of good action and special effects to make you wince and groan at how disgusting it is. It's weird, I sort of enjoy being repulsed at alien embryos being cut out of people and face suckers diving into throats etc etc.

Fassbender stole to show, totally convincing in all the roles I've seen him in. Everyone else was a little bit shit I thought. One of the guys looked like Commander Shephard and there was one scientist who had a fucking awesome ginger mohawk which I liked.

Just don't go watch with your girlfriend. I lost all circulation in my left hand.

See this is one of many issues I had with this film! It just felt like nothing was explained, I'm not one of those that needs a plot and explanation handing to me on a plate, I like a bit of ambiguity and questioning what has happened, but this film just seemed so unthought out to me.

that made me cringe, it was just such a pointless part in the story, and him being there... was it supposed to be some big reveal? it left me thinking wtf, but not in a good way

i don't really understand why they got guy pearce to play weyland, and aged him with make up. why not just get an older actor to play the part? i think there will be a lot of deleted scenes and extra footage involivng a younger weyland to come

I know, it just seemed so pointless, he reminded me of jonny knoxville when he plays that old dude in jackass, i just couldnt take that character seriously at all

I agree with Bambi that this is a reason why the movie skips a beat is cause it doesn't always explain everything. I just think it would be to much screen time just murdering countless crew members where as if you show two or three being killed it ends up being a message to us that the others all got smashed. It's bad part of the movie these questions but I like to see past them.

but when and where did they die? you can't just write a group of characters out of a script and ask the audience to make up their own mind about how they died
