The year 0000...?

Okay so in the original Final Fantasy VII the year is apparently 0007 (lol it matches the number of the game) and Crisis Core is set in the year 0000 when Aerith is 15. First I ever seen the year mention was in the Final Fantasy wiki.

Now my question is, how on earth can "0000" be a year and if it then what the heck came before it? The year "-0001?" o.o

I think there must have been some even that either reset the date or the whole year 0000 thing is not true...Seems like there would be a valid explanation for it though...I'll try searching to see what comes up

Am just after looking at something on wiki about this and it goes from 1999 to 0000 I was thinking it would change after a large event like 10 BC and 10 AD so everything before the event would go back like -0001 but looking at the wiki thing it seem's to just reset's after 1999 to 0000

Maybe they were afraid of the Y2K problem?

Is the Final Fantasy Wiki the only place that mentions what year it is in the game? Because I don't remember there being any evidence of such a thing in the game itself, unless there was some easteregg-ish sort of thing. Maybe it was in one of the guide books?

This is interesting as I've heard other things about the timeline. I've heard that FFVII actually took place in 1997, as it was to have taken place at the same time that it came out on our planet. I don't believe that, as surely each planet would have its own timeline anyway. That said, there is nothing to say that FFVII's timeline did not just happen to be on its 1997th year (from a point) at the same time as us.

I don't recall the actual game shedding light on year dates, so I take it that all of these timeline attempts are just created by magazines and Ultimania additions to try and order everything. I therefore don't think that it is vital to follow it.

I always figured FF7 to take place in the past, just because they were just discovering mako as an energy source and the use of swords and Nanaki's tribe gave the impression as well. I always thought of it being around 1200 AD in our world, years after the Cetra and such. Like a 'medieval' era by definition of the FF7 world if you will.

Thanks, now I really think our medieval times suck balls compared to FF7 version of medieval times.

Now back on topic, I don't really think the producers were considering stuff like the Y2K or any of these myths while making the game. Perhaps they didn't wanted to use large year date numbers to avoid people trying to make FF7 fit somehow in our timeline (believe me there are people who do that).

The Final Fantasy Wikipedia is the first and only place I've seen the year mentioned. Before that as far as I knew they never went into that much detailed. It could have been in the year 8527AD for all I knew. I don't think the manual said anything about the year either. If it does automatically reset to 0000 like that then it's weird =x You'd think it would reset to 0001.

And thanx for the emphasis on FF7 medieval vs Earth medieval. I'm glad someone shares my enthusiasm. It makes sense right? lol
