Talking FFX Jap, Eng, ending debate

i dont know if this has been posted. but i just watched the ending of ffx in japanese..(no it wasent my first time)
but as i scrolled down to read comments people were agruing about the fact that in english she said "i love you" and in japanese she said " Thank You" now to me BOTH ARE JUST AS GOOD but I cant even decide which would've been better..

ENGLISH:Her saying i love you made it so suspenseful because she spoke her heart before he had to dissappear..which at the moment would've been forever..so she had to tell him how she felt before it was too late..AKA THE SONG 1000 WORDS..

JAPANESE:Her saying thank you was a mature way of speaking her heart.."Thank you" To Tidus was meant for thanking him for all he has done..believe it or not..IT WAS TIDUS WHO COMPLETELY PUT AN END OF SINS KILLINGS FOR GOOD. he gave them all hope and strenght and didnt give up because he didnt want Yuna to die..so throughout all of their adventures...The hardships..the tears..the memories..thank you was also good enough..

BUT I STILL CANT CHOOSE WHAT WAS BETTER..

      WHAT DO YOU THINK?!

The only reason it was "Thank" You in japanese, is because japanese people rarely say "I love you", I think they only say it when they truely believe it, or if they are Married, but I'm unsure on that.....

....She probably meant the same thing either way so it doesn't matter ^^

Yea, I was wondering that too. Personally, I like the english version better, it just seems more meaningful. But, if Kashikoi Ume right, then it would make sense.

Personally, I like "I love you" better, simply because it shows just how much Yuna cared for Tidus. It makes the ending a lot more tragic as well, and I'm a sucker for tragic romances xD

Either way you look at it though, Yuna still conveys what's in her heart to Tidus, and that's all that really matters.

"Thank You." It carries alot more weight than "I love you" IMO.

This is because for me, the Tidus/Yuna romance is to me, a secondary characteristic to their relationship. I find that FF fans tend to catagorize their relationship into simple cliches. To me, they are two people who are fated to cross paths, who learn and grow from eachother with the romance only being a supplement to this. Of course, there is the romantic attraction, be all means - but the depth of their relationship stems from mutual respect, admiration and eventual understanding.

By meeting Tidus, Yuna's personality opens up, and he teaches her how to look on the brighter side of life despite how dreary things maybe. In turn, Yuna's personality rubs off on Tidus - he matures, and becomes more thoughtful. Her stories of Jecht slowly make him realize that there was a side to his father that he never considered. as he was blinded by contempt. This aspect was very important to Tidus' story.

FFX was tragic, yes, but it was a bittersweet, kind of happy tragic. "I Love You" is more cliche, and it makes it seem like Tidus/Yuna were a typical Hollywood romance. This isn't the case at all. Tidus teaches Yuna to be hopeful and optimistic for the future, something she just wasn't able to do before what with her fate as a summoner and all. For that, she thanks him. He's gone, but everything she learned from him she will keep, forever in her heart.

And thus, "Thank you" IMO carries alot more meaning than the simplistic "I love you."

I know it's a bit of a repeated issue in the FFX-discussion world, but I really love this thread and hope more people reply

I think Thank You might be a better choice..

After all, Yuna probably might have more stuff to thank Tidus for. Furthermore, sure, it might be good to declare her own feelings, but since Tidus was to disappear like forever, I think to declare her love might instil regret in Tidus, maybe he won't be able to rest in peace...??

      Well, just my opinion.

Quite the amazing masterpiece by Uncle Ulty!

      The results are.
      Thank You = 3 votes = 50%
      I Love You = 3 votes = 50%
      Other = 1 vote = 16.67%

How the heck does that work???

I don't think they mean the same thing, I still stand by the fact that "Thank you" says so much more and fits the theme of the game/Yuna and Tidus' characters much better.

Thank You = You have done alot for me, I appreciate you, I will never forget what you taught me, I will live on with everything you said in my heart, my life will be forever happier because of the time we spent together etc.

I Love You = I am in love with you, we are romantically linked and this ending is sad and tragic.

That could be possible. I think the FFX ending wasn't as tragic as many make it seem to be. To me, it was sad, but it was very hopeful at the same time. Tidus teaches Yuna how to value life, a lesson she will always make her strive for happiness. The "I love you" ending makes everything seem a tad bit more bleak and unhappy.

I'm interested in a Japanese person's interperetation of arigato. Languages never translate one-for-one.

I believe there is a lot of Japanese etiquette in FFX that native English speakers are missing.

For instance, Yuna is excessively polite--to our way of seeing things-- saying "I'm sorry!" and bowing very deeply to everyone, even though she's a noble's daughter and a summoner. Perhaps it's some gender-issue or age-issue popping up, but at one point she bows so deeply to Wakka that he says "hey, hey!" in protest. Yuna's instincts in FFX seem to be that of a girl who's overly polite, steeped in old-fashioned etiquette, although she's beginning to shake free of tradition by the end. So part of it's habit.

But I also feel that she uses arigato to express a particular depth of feeling that "I love you" doesn't convey. I have the impression that Yuna's arigato carries a layer of ... regard? respect? looking up to Tidus as someone who opened her eyes to a larger world. I can't put my finger on the word's exact connotation, save that it shows something about how she sees their relationship.

On the other hand, I think Yuna takes refuge in formality as a way of softening the pain both are feeling, just the way he says "I'm sorry I couldn't take you to Zanarkand" instead of speaking more directly about his regrets, their relationship, or his feelings.
Their verbal dodges remind me of something Wakka and Lulu said much earlier in the game, when Tidus demanded to know why they hadn't told him what the pilgrimage really meant for Yuna: "We weren't hiding it..." "...It was just too hard to say." It's too hard for Yuna to tell Tidus all he means to her at that moment. If she did, they'd both start bawling. "Thank you" says what she isn't saying.

Yuna's arigato seems to me delicately nuanced in the same way that haiku is both formal and intensely intimate in its spareness.

I'm not sure if I'm right, though.

I voted for both. I can picture her saying one, and then I can picture her saying the other, and truly meaning both to Tidus.

However, if I had to pick one, I would go with "I Love You". This basically covers how thankful she is to him in one shot; sort of a killing 2 birds with one stone thing.

The only problem I have with her saying "love" is that they were only together for a few months at most. While sure she has a strong emotional pull towards him and that could have resulted in him being Yuna's Final Aeon, he simply was a mere dream in teh end, so her "love" statement seems a bit pre-mature.

However, both are suitable to me.
