So, I've heard quite a few good things about FFVI and I'm looking to buy it. I also don't own FFV so the FF Anthology would be a benefit as far as that's concerned, but I was wondering if FFVI has any noticable differences on the Playstation vs. the GBA, and, if so, which one is better?

Anthology is true to the original SNES versions of V and VI. Can't speak to the GBA version. But if you're looking for the original experience, I would say go with the Anthology.

The GBA version of the game comes with additional features not seen on the PSone version, such as extra Espers and perhaps new dungeons. I haven't played the GBA version so I don't know exactly what else it has. The PSone version, as well as being more true to the original SNES release as said, comes with CGI, so it just falls upon what you would prefer. There's no real "better" version as FFVI is an awesome game regardless of the format it's on. :)

The GBA version comes closer to the better translation. All the old ones had terrible translations. Such as when you (Spoiler!)
meet Sabin and it makes no sense about calling him a bear.

All the weird sounding parts have been translated properly in the GBA version. Although, I feel that the Anthology has better sound to it...

If you're looking for noticeable changes, then you might want to get the GBA version. It has a lot the others don't have. But the Snes version also has something the others don't have....

I can't tell you which to pick, because I own them all and feel they all offer what the other doesn't xD

Thanks for the quick replies :) I guess if there's no major downside to the anthology, I'll go with that, since it's about a third of the price of FFVI Advance alone. I'll look forward to playing it. 8)

Ah ha, I was thinking of the same thing Jophelerx. I decided just to play the original snes game but I was considering the gba and psx version as well. Got some pretty good info from this thread. Thanks for posting this and good luck! =D

Anthology is as close to the original experience as your gonna get, better sound, and FF V has a MUCH better translation than the GBA one (I'm pretty sure FF VI had an okay translation for GBA, but I haven't played it to much)

plus it looks better on a TV, than on a tiny screen IMO :P

EDIT: oh well I see you already made the right choice, and I'm a little late haha my b :)

The PS version is ok. It's as close to the original as your going to get. However after playing the GBA version I find it hard to play the PS version now as the PS version does have god awful loading times. Though I guess seeing as you haven't played either this wont be much of a problem. I also like the fact that after you defeat the final boss the game effectivly carries on; making it possible to
get Ragnarok in both Esper and weapon form

The GBA version also have added extra's such as new Espers (based on past FF bosses and summons such as Gilgamesh and Diablos), new dungeons and new suoer-bosses.

I never liked the idea of playing them on the Playstation for some reason. I guess after playing VI on the SNES, it just seemed hollow on the PS. But it doesn't really matter, because the GBA version is much better. The translation is great, and there's extra fun stuff to do.

Sorry for continuing this, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. Haha.

Are you kidding? The FFV Anthology version had a HORRID translation. A lot of the text didn't make sense at times, they use references that weren't previously mentioned so they come out of nowhere...they call Wyverns "Y BURNS" to my knowledge. Y BURNS! I'm going to have to go with the fact that the GBA versions have a more decent translation over the Anthology; if you're looking for text that you can follow and flows better, I suggest GBA. If you're looking for "as close to the original experience as possible", go with the PS1 Anthology.

I suggest, regardless, playing the GBA Versions. Sure, there is added stuff and it isn't as close to the SNES as the PS1...but I just like the flow of it better. I couldn't stand the FFV Anthology translation, and I'm assuming the others are the same.

If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

The music in the PS version sounds... anemic, because only about half the midi channels actually translated over to the PS sound system. Oh, and if you go for the PS disk, expect load times that were not in the original, nor are in the GBA version.

The graphics in the GBA version seemed very white-washed to me, which detracted from the bleak feel that the original had (you were fighting a loosing battle in a gritty world, and it only seemed appropriate that everything was dark).

The thought of having a portable version was very attractive to me at first, but once I heard a few key things about it, I decided I'd rather not have it at all:
- The good/entertaining glitches from the game were removed
- The bad glitches weren't corrected: they just made them impossible to do (specifically, they didn't fix Sketch for Relm, just turned it off on certain enemies)
- The dialogue and events in the game made a push in many places towards PG instead of sitting at PG-13. This one hurt the most - it was what set me off more than anything else.

The PSX version has it's own share of flaws, but if you want to experience FF6 the way it was when America first saw it, the Anthology version is the only way to go.

I owned the Anthology version, but the loading times were terrible. I still beat both, but maybe the gba version is the way to go

I always think the GBA is the final and complete versions of the game.

Yes, there is the DS generation, but it is more like a reamek to me, while SNES, PS, GBA are like a remastered copies of one game.

Ok Short version

the PS version has V with it, and corrected some...grammer/translation issues from the Snes version.

The GBA version added a dungeon with an extra boss who was supposedly going be the original game but was cut...

And Rut...where are you getting your info about there being a DS Version? I heard they were THINKING about making VI and V for the 3DS, but that was it, Thinking about it.
