It is a great game and perhaps high up on my favourites list but it does fall foul of a few things that irk me.
I hear praise for the story but in truth it is full of holes and by the end and throughout you find yourself asking questions that have no official source for answers.

I like the junction system as far as you can customise attacks and defence and stats as you like. You need to be a bit savvy to make sure everybody gets a stat junctioned (unless you enjoy long periods of refining stuff)

I like the character designs flowing around a common theme. The players don't look like a rabble and their relationships are all highly feasible.

Getting wages. Gil for time elapsed. Excellent idea

The FMVs. The in-game graphics now look a bit jagged and rough but the FMVs are still pretty decent.

Triple Triad. Some rules are annoying but this game is very accomplished for a non-compulsary minigame.

Now the bad:

I hate the lack of MP in favour of stock units of spells.
I havent read every page of responses for this thread but I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks having to do a minimum of 12 draws to get 100 spells is a bit tedious. Refinement isn't the answer because you get an 80% loss on stockpile. (500 spells are needed to get the next level up spell)

EXP as 100 per level and Level caps at 100 is another bad idea. your strongest characters could be killed by Level5Death unless they have protection.

Lack of armour/accessories/weapons
This means you HAVE to dedicate spells in a single stat because you can't get equipment that has any autostats.
Granted you get character bonus abilities but there's a max of 4 and they have to share attack, attribute and miscellaneous function.

Having to have Item/magic junctioned to use it. Unhelpful

I just beated it today and I loved it.I think it should have been longer though but still it was amazing. And the love story was just too cute

I really enjoyed this game, I really enjoyed the Junction system as well as the battle system, I liked the whole trigger thing as well, although it made it a lil too easy when you can hit a critical every turn.

As for story, I actually enjoyed it and I didn't think it was really lacking (It would've been nice to see the other characters more actively involved in the story line during the second half of the game though).

FF VIII was my first RPG to play, probably that's why i like it the most. But then again there are more things about FFVIII that made me feel that way.

Didn't vote because i cant make up my mind. For one its all there, humour, some atmosphere, the best card game, decent side quests, and the 'little' FF elements.

However what i actually loathed were the characters, all this 'whatever' bullshit with Squall. I couldn't take it seriously, worst FF story ever, and most boring character designs. However this game probably still spawned massive amounts of faggy fanfics, rivaling all the Cloud/Aerith rubbish from FF VII.

The junction system was interesting, i didn't like it how in most all new FFs after VI all your characters can use the same magic, abilities etc. Making up a character preference purely aesthetic, unlike in IX and most other older ones where all the characters had strict job classes. But if you have to have this shitty open class system, Junctioning is interesting as you power your characters by assigning magic etc.

Also crappy Chocobo sidequest ;_;

I'm glad to see the result of this poll for 'yes' is winning by a landslide. I've run into so many people who seem to hate this game, and it's kinda sad to see, but I think it was really fun and interesting (and also easy to replay!) Obviously I picked "love it," for various reasons which I am too tired to list out right now. BUUUT I'd play it again if I had the motivation to, for the third time. ;3

Yeah. The replay value (after figuring out the necessity of drawing) is pretty high, really.

I don't know about a third time through, though.

It's been a while since I last played it, and I can honestly say I'd play it again in the future once some time has passed. For me, this game doesn't take all that much time to beat, which is why I would replay it again. :3

Absolutely love it. It was my first FF I bought (I had played FFVII before) and I still think it's just amazing.

I love it. My first Final Fantasy was X, after I finished it and noticed what I've been missing out on all these years I made a plan to play all the FFs before that one. When I got FFVIII I wasn't expecting much since I typically thought X would more advance in everything than all the rest before it, but I ended up hooked on VIII even more so than X. Even after I went and passed IX, VIII was still my favorite. That was because I liked how the game offered a realistic-more-modern time-atmosphere, and the romance of course, I'm just that type of guy. =P I won't say VIIIs battle system is the best of them all, but I did have fun playing the game and getting the final weapons. *drools at Lionheart e_e* Thing is, regardless of how my level of RPG comprehendsion/experience was then and is now, FFVIII gave me the biggest overall impact and satisfaction thus far.

first of all, hello(my first post), i love FF 8 couse its not childish story and represent some side of our world, cruel and realistic. i played since game was relised for EU and i still play it,finishing over and over again without any bothering of starting. i think ff8 will be always some measure for all ff serials...ask anyone : Do you play FF? yes ff8. ;) gl & hf.

Love it. Though it was my first FF so I'm biased.

But I'd probably of fallen in love with the game regardless. Before coming across FFVIII, I had never thought a video game could actually form into an obsession.

And even now, some 7/8 years later, the obsession has still yet to completely cease. The replay value is ridiculously high. I'd beat it for the 400th time if my friend (whom I let borrow it) hadn't moved away. =(

Also, I liked the whole "anime high school" vibe.

A beautiful game with beautiful music and an addicting story. And let's not forget Sir Laguna Loire and the moombas (whom IMO, rival the moogles for cutest species in all of Final Fantasy). Yeah, I love it. =D

Best Game Ever?

I love final fantasy VIII. Originally I bought it for my dad (yea really!!!) along with a ps1. I saw him play it a few times and I thought omg, i'll never play that game. Then one day I was bored so I just picked it up and...got lost in the wonderful world of final fantasy. It was just such an awesome game and the music was epic!(well some of it) The junction system was pure genius BUT the magic (having to constantly draw and stock) was awful. I hardly ever used magic, except for aura (best magic ever) and just stuck to limit breaks really (soo cool!). Squall was my favourite character. Even now i still play ffviii every now and again and i have the soundtrack too. The best part of the game was the SeeD test in Dollet, no doubt about it. Oh yeah and seifer's a jerk!!

My favourite game of the series, without question. I immediately liked everything that was introduced throughout the game. I thought the storyline was nicely drawn out, engaging, and the romance was intertwined perfectly. Loved the game, love the game, will always love the game.

I still can't decide my feelings on this game, as it's the only FF game I own that I have not beaten. I'm kind of on-the-fence because the characters don't capture my interest as well as those in VII, IX, X, and XII, though some parts of this game remind me vaguely of Harry Potter. I still don't understand exactly why though.

I'm changing my mind. Before I loathed this game, and was a very vocal critic of it. But now, I love it. It's a lot of fun, although it takes a loooong time to really get going - once you have, it's awesome. About, half way through disk 2 is when I started finally enjoying this game. And I've just killed Ultima Weapon and gotten Eden ^^
