As of last week, Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a multi-platform game. However, it took a year for the PlayStation 3 version to come out. How come?

“This was all about timing. When we began development, we were provided with the development equipment needed to produce titles for the Xbox 360 before that of the PS3,” the development team said in a fan powered Q&A. Microsoft and Tri-Ace started Infinite Undiscovery back in 2006. Originally, Microsoft Game Studios was the game’s publisher, but in 2007 they handed Infinite Undiscovery over to Square Enix. Star Ocean: The Last Hope was first announced in 2007 without a platform.

That answers one question, but why did Tri-Ace use CG models instead of anime portraits for the interface on the Xbox 360 version?

“When marketing to the North American audience, it was determined that the anime-esque characters and pop-culture imagery did not fit with the gameplay, and as such we changed the design we had prepared as the theme for these elements. Normally we would need to look into redesigning the characters in the game themselves as well, but this would cause too large of a gap between the release dates for Japan and North America, and so we decided not to modify any of the in-game characters.”

Personally, we think they should have waited and released them both at the same time. We would much rather play the PS3 version because of the anime themes and such. :mokken:

It didn't fit? I'd have thought it would fit rather well. It worked with the Tales series and the gameplay there has some similar elements to that of Star Ocean IV by the looks of it. Can't they just admit that they had a crazy idea of what the west likes and decided not to use the anime portraits because of that?

Really Tri-Ace, I don't know why you still bother with the Xbox 360. It didn't work too well for Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean IV in terms of sales, so why is Resonance Of Fate multi-platform as well?

Yeah, we're with you Swift. We're getting tired of the "This-won't-appeal-to-westerners" argument. Just make the game how you want to make it and release it. Odds are we are going to like it.

If they're basing this of anime sales or something, that's kind of dumb. Considering as how most people stream or pirate their anime anyway. :mokken:

How much of it was Micro$oft paid for this to be a timed exclusive as well? They do that with a hell of a lot of other games :wacky: I suppose it's not too bad for 360 owners, apart from the anime changes, additonal characters and the graphics looking less like plastic there's not really much that's changed so they haven't really lost out.

To be honest, the graphics look the same on both to us. However, we're color blind, that may have something to do with it. :hmmm:

We really wish Microsoft hadn't done that. We really would have liked the anime feel in the game. :sad3:
