Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has revealed that Final Fantasy XIII went to Xbox 360 because Microsoft “asked us” to develop a title in the series for the console.

Speaking with Siliconera, he said the install base as it was at the time for 360 was just too good to pass up on to not get the game on the platform.
“The Xbox team has been asking us to have a [Final Fantasy] game developed on our platform,” said the exec. “Also, the Xbox 360 console is available in many homes in US and European markets so that was not really a hard decision to make.”

In July 2008 at E3, Wada delivered a world-ending megaton by revealing the once-PS3 exclusive was heading to 360, the first time a FF title appeared outside of a PlayStation platform in 12 years.

All just by tapping MS exec Don Mattrick’s back and showing a video.
Final Fantasy XIII was released yesterday for PS3 and 360 in a US/EU sim-ship, with over 3 million units shipped in the west, it was revealed this morning. Overall shipped numbers for the series now stands at 96 million.
Writer for the game, Motomu Toriyama, is to speak at GDC tomorrow.

Wow, Im glad they decided to make one. Im sure alot of fans were wondering when a Final Fantasy was going to be released onto the 360. I think this may be the only one we get though.

I dunno, just an odd feeling. To be honest, I didnt think they would go ahead and let Microsoft have an FF title. Microsoft are arseholes IMO at the end of the day with the whole Bungie and Gears of War arguements, so SE letting them have this was a good thing. But its just a feeling Ive got. Im hoping Im wrong of course!

It really depends on how things go with the next console generation, IMO. Nowadays, with production costs being so high and the competition between consoles much tighter compared to last gen (when PS2 dominated), it makes more sense for developers to go multi-platform with their big releases. Of course, there are still exceptions and both sides have some great exclusives. But it'll be interesting to see how the sales shake out for the 360 and PS3 and what Squeenix makes of it going forward. :)

I wonder if that same decision would still be made today. If I am not mistaken PS3 currently outsells 360 now that they are both competing at the same sales point. Such wasn't the case when this decision was originally made.

I was pumped right from the start when I first heard this news back in '08. At that time, and still now, all I own is a Xbox 360 for the current Generation of consoles. I was not planning on buying a PS3 jsut to play one game, even if it was a main-line FF game.

I think that FF games should be multi-platform, but I do have to say I enjoyed the run the games had on Sony consoles only from FFVII-FFXII.

Im glad that XIII was on the 360 because I have always liked the 360 and an FF RPG on it would be awesome. And thats XIII. I must say it is really impressive to bring a playstation main series over to Xbox. I love FF and I love XIII on 360. Microsoft are idiots sometimes but im glad they asked SE to do this. Its a realy great experience and I think FF should be ps3 and 360 from now on.

I really wanna see how many people bought which versions and compare at the end. I hope we can get the number from day 1 sales soon, or just wait for first week sales :hmmm:

The PS3 version will have sold more without a doubt, it already has a 2 million advantage because of the Japanese sales. However, there's a bit of a euphemism on "asked us" when it's documented many a time that Micro$oft "paid" for Final Fantasy XIII to come to their console, not the entire series, just the one game.

I think FF would feel weird playing on a xbox :p
the xbox controller is supreme when playing FPS games but on rpg I never tried before.
IMO FF belongs to PS.

Well barring the Japanese sales, I think PS3 did sell more. I walked into a Gamestop store today before work, and I chatted up the employee and a few people came in asking to buy the PS3 version of FFXIII but the guy told them that they were all sold out. He said that the store kept getting shipments each day, but they all sold out really fast.

And here I thought you could just waltz into the store and grab the copy without pre-ordering - seems it's not really the case xD

I'm actually glad they chose to make the move to cross-platform with XIII, despite it not being as high a quality on the 360 as it is on the PS3 due to porting/technology issues at least it can be enjoyed by a much broader audience than it would have seen being a PS3 exclusive.

It may have angered some die-hard PS3 fans, maybe even some of the 360 fans, but the point is sometimes change is a good thing and this is one change I most welcome.

When it was announced that FFXIII has jumped the ship of PS3 exclusivity, I wasn't bothered at all. Fair enough, I thought, let Xbox 360 gamers have a go at the game and see whether not it will sell well on a console stereotypically associated with FPSs and racing games. Granted, I did feel a little sorry for Sony - seeing as though they lost yet another trump card to Microsoft (at the time the PS3 was facing a slightly bleak existence).

So Microsoft "asked" SE to make FFXIII for the 360? More like the money, as Ryan said. It's not unusual for Microsoft to throw cash at developers (like Rare) to secure third party games for its console. Then again, console exclusivity is a very expensive business nowadays, so I guess at the end of the day, everyone gains from it in some way.
