Ok before I get attacked and lynched by smokers please read this: I AM NOT MAKING FUN OR ATTACKING ANY SMOKERS ON HERE. I had to put that up so I don't get yelled at or killed.

When is a persons smoking habit too much? recently a cousin of mines parents died from lung cancer brought on from smoking. This caused My cousin and her brother to be sent to a foster family. So my question is is a persons cigarettes worth the chance you could die and leave your family with no one to take care of them? I know people die from other stuff to but im focusing on the effects of smoking.

p.s. I don't think this goes in the sleeping forest but if it does feel free to move it ^^ Oh the only other thread like this is in the zanarkand ruins

If people want to smoke, they can smoke as much as they like. I suppose it becomes too much when they think it becomes too much. Which would probably be if/when they start to develop lung problems or whatever as a result of it. But, even then, if they want to carry on, that is their decision. People can hardly claim ignorance to the risks of smoking these days, what with all the warnings on the packs, so I suppose they do think that the risk that they might contract something as a result is worth the pleasure. That, or they simply don't think about it. Either way, they only have themselves to blame if they do develop something as a result of the habit, and I have no sympathy for them.

Personally, I won't tolerate cigarettes in close proximity to me. I absolutely DESPISE cigarette smoke, and I would never even consider smoking myself. I'd probably make myself ill if I tried - whilst I'm not particularly squeamish, I'd rather not run the risk of contracting lung cancer or whatever, and I'd prefer not to die slowly from that, if its all the same. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who is smoking around me at all is smoking too much. I respect that people can do whatever they want, I only ask that they don't do it around me.

I've never been around someone who smokes cigars, so I have no opinion about that. My biological father smokes a pipe and, whilst I like the smell of his tobacco (although I still won't go near the smoke) I still don't think much of smoking a pipe. My mother won't allow him to do it in the house anyway.

I'm a smoker. And it's too much already -_-
I don't have very much will power on a good day, so quitting is pretty hard. People start because they think it's cool but I was thinking of all the money I could have saved since I was 13 and woooooowwwww.
It's very detrimental to your health of course, but your right, Flonne. I don't think about it. It's not 100% positive that lung cancer via smoking is going to be what kills me.

@Flonne - Nicely put. I sgree with everything you've said. And Cigar smoke smells different than cigarette smoke. That's the only difference. That I've experienced. -Gags-

This is pretty much how I feel as well. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke and the smell also happens to linger. It gets in your clothes and your hair. I just find it unpleasant altogether. I don't really care if someone wants to smoke; that's their business. They know the risks and they are willing to take them.

What I absolutely can't stand is smokers who feel like you should endure their cigarette smoke and enjoy it. I have family members like that. They sit there and puff away, blow the smoke in your face and then get offended when you leave the room or step away. :ffs:

If someone wants to smoke, it's their own business but I'd rather not be in the vicinity while they do it.

And to answer the question, I personally don't feel it's worth the risk. Yes, people can still develop cancer or other diseases and there's really no way of knowing when or you you'll die; I still think killing yourself slowly with cigarettes is a bad idea. It also seems like a rather disgusting habit considering the smell and taste. And smokers seem to just distribute their ashes anywhere (on windowsills, on the floor, on tables). >.>

In my view, it isn't right to knowingly continue to smoke without making any effort to quit while endangering your own life, perhaps the lives of those around you and possibly leaving children orphaned. That of course, is entirely up to them and if they want to make that risk despite clear consequences, then so be it even though this is a wrong way to go about it. They know full well the health risks involved when it comes to cigarettes as we're no longer in the 70s. Seeing as I generally hate enduring smoke in a lot of public locations, the smoking ban in public places in the UK (launched in 2006, was it?) though controversial, at least brought in something favourable in my opinion despite its cons.

I have to endure cigarette smoke almost on a daily basis. There is always a large gathering of smokers by the front gates of college congregating on that spot nearly all day to smoke and socialise. The thing is, it isn't a very large spot to hang around at all. It's nightmarish whenever I have to leave. The enormous crowds of students coming out are bad enough, without the smokers hanging around at the front, taking up a lot of the space, forcing a lot of us off the pavement and onto the road and taking up the space by the bus stop as well. That shouldn't have to happen and there's nothing more I despise than the smokers blowing smoke in all directions and leaving snubbed out cigarettes on the buses.

I personally think it's horrible that anyone would want to do something that they know will cause them health problems, it's such a waste of a person's life when they die early as a result, and it's also really insulting to people who have disabilities who have done nothing to intentionally hurt themselves, and still have to struggle to live everyday. Or people who are terminally ill, and wish they could live longer and do everything they can to try--to see people intentionally doing things to shorten their own lives and worsen their health would be a slap in the face to them, I think. Humans in general I think, in a lot of cases, have a tendency to waste a lot of things for the sake of being "cool" and fitting in, and it's kind of disgusting really when that's not as important as being healthy and being satisfied with your own life, no matter what other people think. I mean I always have to think of the crazy cultists who drink poisoned punch, a lot of them probably join the groups because they want to find somewhere to belong and fit in, and look where it leads them O_O And I mean, if someone is smoking only to try to relax themselves under stress, and it's not for the sake of being cool, I can't discredit their attempting to help themselves, but there are other ways to relieve stress that are perfectly healthy, so people who smoke for that reason are not really going about it in a positive way, IMHO :hmmm:

Not a smoker, if you can't tell XD

When youv got lung cancer youv gone too far.

Seriously its daft as fuck. Stains your teeth damages your body, makes your breath and clothes smell and costs you a shit load of money. Dont start smoking its dumb.

Makes me wonder why i havnt quit.

They make them so addictive that it's really hard to quit. Even some who do quit end up going back to it. My mother quit smoking when my siblings and I were young. When we moved back to her home state and she was around her family members more (the majority of them were smokers), she started smoking again and she's been smoking ever since. She keeps saying she's going to quit again but she hasn't yet. My aunt just says she doesn't care if she gets lung cancer and dies because she enjoys smoking. That's a pretty horrible view, imo, but it's her life.

I can get past the urges for a smoke quite easily but therl just be times at work where something goes wrong and il be stressing like hell and il go out for a smoke and things wont seem so bad.
I think if i was ever serious about quitting id book a week off work and detox at home. No work to stress me though id have to make sure i didnt touch any alcohol. The urges when your a bit boozy are stong.

I have smoked before. When I was 14 to be exact, and I had only done it for 3 days. We would go to our aunt's house everyday and I would sneak one out of her Malboro packs and experiment. I really didn't see the fascination with it, and since I did it just to see what it was like, I just stopped smoking - after those 3 days. And I haven't started again or considered doing it again ever since then. I have wondered before if I could have quit in such short time, why it takes a while for everyone else to quit, but I know now it all varies depending on their intake and how much they're addicted from all of the nicotine in their brain. My aunt has quit twice as far as I know yet she's still a smoker.

I think smokers take it too far when its actually starting to do damage to their body that they're finally beginning to feel physically (like lung cancer). But again, it's their decision to make whether they want to smoke or not. There are plenty of people around here that know nearly all of the dangers of smoking (majority of them kids at my school) and yet don't care to quit anytime soon because they know that "they're not going to live past 30." But honestly, I don't see why people think that poisoning their body like that is worth the 'pleasure senses' that they may get from it in the long run. I've read all of the risks of smoking, I've read about all of the ingredients and where they come from in a cigarette, and how they're processed/flavored, etc, so I definitely think its not worth the risk - but to each their own .

I recently tried (and failed) to quit. I highly recommend trying nicotine inhalators though, using that really helped with the cravings. What non smokers tend not to realize is just how hard quitting is. Yes it's costly, unhealthy and smelly but we smokers do it because we like it. Coffee without a cigarette is not coffee!

Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist, but I think smoking isn't as bad as television, media and the medical community have you believe. Sure, too much of anything is bad for you, but I think smoking has become a cop-out for death and illness over time. "Ouch, I scratched my leg, and it's not healing quickly." "Well sir, because of your history of smoking, your blood is thin and/or your skin is deteriorated and doesn't heal as quickly as it should." My example is highly exaggerated, but you can see where I'm coming from. Do I think smoking will cause some ailments? Absolutely. Are they any more frequent than ailments you get from drinking until you're drunk several times in your lifetime? I highly doubt it.

Honestly, I've been exposed to smokers so much in my lifetime that it doesn't bother me at all. If what is said is true, the amount of 2nd hand smoke I've taken in for my lifetime would have me in rough shape. Even the smell of cigarette smoke is something that doesn't bother me. I don't even really notice it. :lew: Cigar smoke on the other hand. That's a pretty nasty smell.

When people smoke while it does bother me, it doesn't bother me as much as you would expect. My mother and my brother smokes and they've been smoking for years so I have gotten used to it. A majority of my family members on my mother's side are or have been smokers at one time. Me personally I constantly try to get them to stop, especially my mother at her age she should really stop, but I have had no luck with that yet sadly. As for me, I don't smoke and I don't plan to. My motto is "The best way to kick the habit is to just not start." and I plan to stick by that for the rest of my life.

Nothing is ever as bad as television or the media would have you believe. :lew:

That doesn't mean it isn't bad for you though. Inhaling tar, nicotine and various other chemicals into your lungs just isn't healthy for you. Of course, that's not a guarantee that you'll get lung cancer or emphysema but I still say smoking isn't worth the risk.

It's also a terrible idea if you already have health problems. My uncle and my cousin both have asthma and they both smoke which caused them both to have even worse breathing problems. =/

I don't have anything against smokers. I just can't see why anyone would want to do it.

I might be a hypocrite, because I'm constantly telling my mom to quit smoking, even though I stand by a complete different point. I've never smoked a cigarette or drug in my life. Personally, I don't see the point, and I'm not curious enough to "check it out".

I understand that people who live with family members that smoke, don't want to lose them and are worried. (I'm one of those people) Although, stating they should stop because of what might happen if we leave others behind, well... They live their lives, and if they're gonna continue smoking, knowing what it will cause, then they are happy doing it, else they would admit they wanted help.

In the end we all die. It might be a retarded thing to say. I rather have my occasional KFC or MacDonalds meal, and drink my coke, than to be a healthy - live on water and fresh cooked vegetables (if you like it, then you aren't doing it because you have to but because you want to). You only live once, enjoy it.

Of course I want my mom to quit smoking, she's 56 and she's smoked since she was 15. She has more common sense than most people I know, and she simply stated she's gonna die anyway. Sure your life-span might be extended by a few years, but... I guess she doesn't wanna go through that process of quitting, for just that. She's happy with it.

Breaks my heart, :lew: it really does. But I'm not one for telling people what and what not to do. Their lives, their decisions, and to the people saying that's selfish, well... Let's just say it's not. You're born, you die. And that all happens in your own life, in your own body, as far as I'm aware.

And after reading what Blakstang said, I full heartedly agree with his post.

I'd imagine it becomes too much when the doctor tells you, "You have lung cancer and it's the cause from all that smoking you did." People do things that risk their lives all the time so smoking is no exception to that. And a lot of them probably do it with the mentally that nothing bad will ever happen to them and some of them probably will live long enough to die of natural causes or something else despite the smoking. I don't know the chances of developing lung cancer from smoking or how long it takes to develop but I think it takes pretty long.

I never tried it because I physically can't. For one thing I have asthma so that isn't something I need to be exposing my lungs to, and I know some people with asthma who still smoke and I consider them idiots. Secondly I'm allergic to smoke period, can't be around it. Doesn't matter if it's caused by Tobacco or a fire, if it's smoke I can only tolerate it for so long before I have to get away from it and even if I could smoke I wouldn't be interested enough to try it and I'd still hate the smell of it. I have an uncle who smells like smoke every time I visit him even when he doesn't have one lit.

I have another relative or a friend of a relative that my father was talking about one day who said, "If I die of lung cancer then I die of lung cancer because I can't quit. It hurts too much to quit." Yes. Some of them are so addicted to it that it hurts them to the extent they'd rather risk lung cancer than quit. Some can't even make it through a movie without wanting to light one up but that spans most likely from an addictive personality than anything else. If it what they want to do then fine just don't do it around me, especially if you're on my property or in my house. I was in line to see a WWE wrestling show at the Sprint Center March 2009 and I had to tolerate some jackass smoking before we finally got in the building.

If I had to leave because of that I would have been pissed too. The tickets were already paid for, I've been standing in line for a half an hour in the damn cold and I wanted to see this show because I have never been to a live wrestling event and that was my first one, and that's why I don't like people smoking in public and I'm glad there public smoking bans being put in place to stop these jackasses so I don't have to smell that crap. Smoke in your house. If you're smoking all the time chances are I'm not going to visit you anyway.

You know what really grinds my gears? Contemporary health concerns.

Ok, so if I'm inhaling such toxic fumes in concentrated amounts, how does someone next to me get lung cancer and I don't?
Answer: the person next to me lives next to a chemical plant. another one would be because it runs in their family..
But I am not making this person next to me cancerous. It's flat out bullshit. Doesn't even make sense and it makes me wonder how people can just believe something so fucking stupid.

Anyways, in the state of Va, USA, smoking has been banned from all enclosed public buildings. This got me thinking: ok, it's not a health concern, and if you pick non-smoking, you won't even smell it. And if you say you do, you're a liar. And even if you did, I guess the clusterfuck of all the other smells in a restaraunt is soooo much better right? So: why have they banned smoking from public places?
The truth hurts, but I'll say it: Because needy people complain, complain, complain about things that deep inside, they really don't care about.

If this was not the case, banning smoking in public places would've came about a loooooong time ago.

Like before you were born.

Or before your parents.

So, I have to go outside to smoke and lose my seat at the bar all the time because Ms or Mr Perfecto is too busy checking their throats for lumps. That they will never get..

Thanx

Depends on the person, depends on the situation as far as your question goes. I feel there's no true right or wrong here, it isn't all black and white. Some people smoke and never think about the repercussions of it. I believe the "terrors" of smoking have been greatly exaggerated by the media, like they do with everything, oh and btw now we have E-Cigarettes which are better because they don't carry an odor, I guess oh and they'll help you to quit smoking, somehow. Smoking never bothered me, I go into a restaurant, sit in the nonsmoking section and never smell the smoke. If I do it's rare and usually because the restaurant's have the smoking and nonsmoking section divided horribly but that's the fault of the restaurant, I don't fault the smoker.
