Rift

Advanced technology.

Supernatural powers.

Parallel universes.

Ancient magic.

Time travel.

"What does all of this mean? These things are widely known as myths, made up stories from the very heart of the imagination. But what if was all true? What if these things appeared in our modern day lives without any warning? How would our lives be affected? Could man make the right choice in using these? Would it lead to great benefit? Or perhaps would it lead to greed and selfishness?"

That was what Professor Patrick Evans asked at his lectures many years ago. But now there is something sinister happening in the background. Across the world, these five very things are happening. Advanced technology has suddenly been found, people are emerging with supernatural powers, parallel universes are making signs of appearing, ancient magic has been demonstrated and time travel has very well become possible. But Professor Evans died a mere two years ago. If these five things, or let alone one of them, fall into the wrong hands, then perhaps the fate of the world is doomed.

The world is changing itself in the year 2008. The rift, as it is described, is occurring. Several ordinary individuals are about to find themselves colliding with one or more of these things. They scattered across the world. They could change the fate of humanity. They could control the destiny of the universe itself. But their morality is unclear. Will they use these five special gifts for doing some good? Or will their inner and dark desires emerge? Only time can tell ...

Dawn Turner glanced at her surroundings. Nothing more than a few forest trees and a clear path were ahead of her. Nothing out of the ordinary, of course. Or at least for now, anyway. She next looked at her watch. Six o'clock in English time. Right. It was time for her to get back home or else her mum and dad would be only worrying about her rather than doing their usual scolding of staying out late. But what was the need to be told what to do? Dawn felt she could be trusted and besides! It was nearing summer. What was the need to come home early when it was lighter now? Typical Mum and Dad, she decided and flicked through the songs on her iPod. They probably want to go out and want me to look after Spark again. Spark was her pet dog that she had since was ten years old. Five years had gone by and he was literally her best friend. How could she ever forget the black white patch on his face that almost looked like a lightning bolt? That was one reason enough to call him Sparky.

She carried on through the forest being so familiar with the path that she was taking. However, something unexpected came. There was another path! Dawn found herself at a crossroads. This was quite strange. She could've sworn that this hadn't been here before ... maybe she was hallucinating? Maybe netball practice had drained a lot out of her. After all, it would be their big championship game in a week and she needed to be focused on that. "We so need a championship after two years of getting beaten," she muttered under her breath. So instead of taking the unknown path, Dawn took her usual road ignoring what she thought she had just seen with her eyes. Little did she know, that path was quite special indeed ... a path that had once led her down to finding all about Professor Patrick Evans. But there were some things to be explained about that matter. One, he talked a lot of nonsense. And two, he was now dead. Yet lately, she couldn't shake off this eerie feeling that someone was watching her.

[eee I totally didn't notice that you put this up DX]

Aya put his bright pink hair in the usual ponytail and tacked differently shaped, brightly colored hairclips on his bangs.
"How do I look, Shinya?" he asked, turning to his bandmate who was attacking his bleach blond hair with hairspray and a curling iron. Shinya glanced at him sideways. "Cute. Mind holding the iron for me?" was the reply. Aya cheerily held the curling iron that had a thick chunk of Shinya's hair wrapped around it while Shinya brushed the section under it. Soon, his hair was very wavy and straight at the same time. "Where's Saga?" Aya asked. He was now getting into his actual costume, which was a pink dress that ended mid-thigh and white stockings with neon pink fishnets over them and tall pink platform shoes. "Who knows?" Shinya replied, lacing up his shiny black boots. His outfit was very dark compared to what Aya wore. It was a black jacket with no shirt underneath and black leather pants with tall shiny black platform boots.
"The show's going to start in a hour. We have to find him. Can you please go find Sugizo and ask him to find Saga?" Aya asked, putting on his fake long pink eyelashes and covering his eyes in pink eye makeup.

"Oh fine. I'll be back." Shinya left the dressing room in his costume and went to go find their manager Sugizo while Aya fished around in his pink handbag for his equally pink phone that was covered in rhinestones. He called Saga's mobile, and got no reply. He left a message telling Saga to call back as soon as he could and that the show was going to start in a hour and that if he didn't show up when it started he would look really bad. Ten minutes later, a tall man with long black hair tied back into a messy bun carrying a clipboard rushed in. "Is Saga in here?" he asked.
Aya shook his head.
"Damnit! Where could he have gone?"
"I don't know! I just called him! And-"
"Don't get upset right before the kickstart of your tour. Save that for much later. Right now we have to go find Saga."
"You're right Sugizo." Aya said, sniffling. He hugged Sugizo. "Go on stage and do the Para Para for a while. Do anything to keep the crowd happy while Shinya and I look for Saga."
"But I want to go! Make Shinya entertain the crowd." Aya protested fiercely.
"Fine. I want your phone on your person at all times. Got that? You're a sweet looking lolita in Yakuza territory. The last thing we need is another reason for the press to follow us around." Sugizo replied just as fiercely.
Aya kissed him on the cheek then went out into the street to look for his bandmate. He knew the Shinjuku area of Tokyo well enough not to get totally lost, but this time, when he stepped out of the concert hall, he had little of an idea where he was. Boldly he went forward into the busy sidewalks, calling out his bandmate's name with every step he took.

((omg...no offense...but that was incredibly homo. Not sure if that was the point tho..))

Sam hopped into is black convertable Cadillac. "Woah...that was a long day of work..." He thought. Sam had just gotten off of a job for a friend. He got paid 100 dollars and all he had to do was throw an oddly humanly shaped zipped up bag into a river. The movement and noises didn't help him much. After being told to never mention the job, he was paid and left. He drove down the road for a while, deciding whether to go to his cheap ass apartment or hang with some friends. "Today's been a long day...might as well just go to sleep..." Sam pulled into the driveway and went up the elevator. He walked to his apartment. "42 B...this is it!" Pulling open the door, he walked inside. Right into his employer's house. "WHAT THE HELL?!"
"Hey Sam, you get rid of the...package?" The friend asked.
"Yeah man...didn't we have this conversation already?"
"No. Dude, get off the drugs. Anyway, I'm gonna pay you, but you gotta promise to NEVER mention this job."
"Sure dude, whatever."
Sam got his money and put it in his wallet, right next to the other 100 dollars he found in there. "Wierd....this wallet was empty before the job..."

Sam hopped into is black convertable Cadillac. "Woah...that was a long day of work... Wierd though, I remember that exact conversation with Vinnie.... Must be tired....either that, or Deja Vu is real." Professor Evans came to mind for a second. "No...couldn't be that...." "SHUT UP! You gave up on that stuff two years ago." He thought. "It's over...just go home, and sleep."

It was a beautiful morning outside. The sun was shining brightly on the Sander estate. Ray stood out on the balcony of the east end of the building. His hands gripped the railing tightly as he sorted through his thoughts.
His mind was going a million places at once.
"Will they publish my article?""What if I had been able to work with Professor Evans?""Space and time are two separate concepts, completely independant of each other.""I can't believe my device worked.""Will they take me seriously?""Why am I even doing this?""Professor Evans, guide me."

"Sir."
The voice came from inside his room. It was Donavon, Ray's butler. He stood there waiting for Ray to turn around. In his hand was an envelope.
"This just came in the mail for you."
"Thank you Donavon."
He stepped into the room and took the envelope. Ray normally did not look at his mail, but this one had the answer to some of the questions that plagued his mind. The butler stood waiting to hear what it said.
After looking it over for a few moments he read a line out loud for Donavon to hear.
"We regret to say that we are unable to print your article under the research section of our magazine. We will however make it the main story in Science Fiction Today. You will recieve a check in two weeks, right after the magazine goes out to the public. We thank you for your business." Ray let out a deep sigh. "At least it's something. You may go now Donavon."
The butler took a brief bow and left Ray alone once more.

Walking through the door and slamming her bag on the floor, Dawn literally collapsed on to the sofa. "How was netball practice?" Elizabeth Turner, her mother, called from the kitchen. "Fine, just tiring, I guess," she replied, as she flicked on the TV. There wasn't really anything at this time, so she decided to flick to the news on ITV1. Wonder if there's anyone getting killed or attacked lately? Everything's been so quiet lately. Dawn had found that suspicious, but of course, she was the only one. Whilst her mum would be more interested in gossip at work, her dad was slightly different. Simon Turner was quiet the spark in the family, who Dawn obviously thought she had inherited her brightness from. He was in fact a website developer for the local council and also a technician. He always seemed mystified and fascinated by the news. But Professor Evans' immediate death two years ago was the most gripping storyline he had ever encountered. Which was why Dawn had decided to step away and let the police do the work.

Besides, there was enough to worry about. She was in her second last year at high school and she was still trying to get her grades up as well as trying to win a netball championship for the school before she left. Half an hour later, Dawn found herself bouncing her basketball outside in the garden and shooting hoops. So basketball might not have been her sport that she specialised in, but shooting the hoops was helping her enough, anyway. She was the key figure that kept the team together, the one that would encourage them to play at their best, the one that ... her train of thought was immediately cut off. Dawn could hear a rustling in the bushes. She had tried ignoring them at first, but they kept getting louder and louder only creating curiosity in her mind. As Dawn came closer to the rustling, she noticed a pair of dark red eyes. "It is beginning," hissed a voice. But the voice wasn't human; it was telepathic. "The five objects are coming. Are you ready for them?" Dawn jumped back and then before she knew it, the voice was gone.

[note: Aya is supposed to be like that :] ]

Aya fearlessly wandered the streets, desperately looking for his lost band mate. A few kilometers later, he saw a tall boy with chunky black and red hair in a fight with three very large men. "Saga!" Aya called fearfully. The boy looked in his direction. "Run Aya! They'll get you-" Saga was slugged in the stomach by one of the large men.
Aya couldn't move, even if he wanted to. He was too scared to even think. He just stood there in silent terror as his best friend and love was beaten to a pulp by mindless yakuza thugs. But as if some entity took over his body, he opened his mouth and shouted out words in a language he had no idea even existed. And somewhere in this world ancient magics lost to the mists of time exist-Aya shook his head. Why was he reminded of Professor Evans at a time like this? He didn't understand. He blinked then saw that the men that were beating Saga senseless were gone. Saga himself was laying on the sidewalk, his face cut and one of his eyes swollen shut. He bled all over the place, and Aya feared that he might die. He crept to his bandmate and took his large hand into his small one. Again, he said words he hadn't spoken before and all of Saga's wounds were healed.
"Wow Aya, what the hell is going on?" Saga asked, getting up. Aya stayed quiet, still thinking of Professor Evan's lecture about ancient magic. "Dude, are you still thinking about that Professor Evans whackjob? He's dead and buried two years now. Nothing he's said has come true. Let's go back to the concert hall before Sugizo has a heart attack."
Aya smiled at him in his usual cheery way and hand in hand they went back to the concert hall.

Sam couldn't get to sleep. "Mmph...GAH!" He looked at the clock. "only 2:30?!" He had only been asleep for an hour. "Maybe I should take a sleeping pill..." He took a little blue pill and went back to sleep. After what felt like an hour though, he woke up again. "Oh my god, this is bull!" The clock only said 12:00. "Must've been a power outage...." Sam knew this was a lie, since the clock was battery run, but since he was trying to stop thinking of Professor Evans, anything related to that guy would become a coincidence. Sam went back to sleep, knowing that in 2 and a half hours, he would probably be awake again, get pissed and take a little blue sleeping pill.

"God damn it! Not again!"
Ray stood in the dark basement of the Sander estate. This was his "lab" where he made his studies on time and space. Here he created devices that helped with his understanding of these two concepts. Here is where they always disapeared.
Everytime that he felt he was close to getting one of them to work, it would vanish. He could not figure how. He alone had access to this room. Not even Donavon could enter if he tried. The security that he had placed on it should keep everything protected, and the cameras could never catch any thief.
His latest device was the only one that he had been able to complete. It was one that would allow the wielder to bend space. This would allow people to make places come to them while they stood still. He had been able to successfully travel two meters this way.
Now it was gone, and someone had the prototype to the most adavance piece of technology known to man.
For a moment Ray thought of maybe calling the police, but he knew they would do nothing. No one ever believed him other than Donavon.

Then a voice called out to him in a whisper. "This is your doing."

"WHO'S THERE?!"
Ray began to look around frantically in search of its source, but he was alone. No one was there. No one could have even been there. Ray sat down, his face full of stress. Was he losing his mind?

She couldn't have possibly been imagining things, right? That wasn't like her. As Dawn lay in bed later that night dwelling on what she had heard before, she couldn't help, but feel that she was being watched. Every now and again, she glanced at the window thinking that there was a dark shadow there stalking her. But when she looked closer, there was no actual shadow there. This is too weird, she thought, as she gazed at the picture frames on her desk of her with her family and her netball teammates. Just when I thought my life was getting really intense, something like THIS has to happen. Dawn sat up in her bed. She couldn't sleep. The storm outside was getting worse. Speaking of storms, she hated them. She had always been afraid of them since she was a little girl after nearly getting struck by lightning when walking home one night with her dad. But Simon and Elizabeth Turner were both asleep. They had work during the day. Dawn felt somewhat alone in her fear and tried to sleep, but her eyes wouldn't shut.

Then the voice was heard again. "You're thinking about what will happen ..." it whispered; there wasn't any clue or hint to give away if it was male or female. Dawn fell out of bed almost immediately and shivered in fear. That voice scared her so much. What was going on? These kind of things weren't meant to happen to her! She was just a normal girl that wanted to do well in her academic studies and in netball, so that she could get a scholarship to a very high status college somewhere in the country. But all of this didn't seem to matter, at least not to the voice. "There is so much to fear," the voice continued to say. Those same pair of dark red eyes appeared again, but came from the cupboard. As the lightning continued to flash without warning, Dawn rose to her feet and walked towards where the eyes were. But when she got there, there was ... nothing. All of this ... and it was nothing? Then without warning, Simon rushed into the room. "Dawn, are you all right? I heard you falling out of bed!" he exclaimed.

There it was the tape from his latest experiment. It was lying there right on top of the VCR he had used to view just the day before. Whatever had been taking his inventions had forgot to take the evidence, or maybe it knew no one would believe a simple vido tape. It was so easy to alter them nowadays that it wouldn't hold credibility outside the building.
For his own sanity he felt he had to watch it to make sure that he had not just imagined that his device work. Sure enough it played.

There he was, his face in the camera as he set it to record. He back away so that his whole body was now completely visible, and began to speak. 'This is Trial 10 of prototype 361. I have perfomed tests of prototype 361 without a host, with inanimant objects of many objects, and with a Rat subject. I thus far have not found any negative side affects on any subject. Trial 10 will be the Human Trial. I will be the test subject for this trial.'
Ray turned around and stepped onto an 'x' shaped mark on the ground.
'Trial 10 will commence in 3...2...1'
Ray lifted his left hand as if he were going to check his watch, but instead of a watch, there was what seemed to be a mechanical wrist band. He pressed a button on it and it lit up.
For a moment it appeared that Ray was in two places on the camera at the same time, but only for a moment. Now there was only one Ray in a different position than he had started. He turned to the camera with and excited look on his face and spoke. 'Trial 10 has been completed, now I will review the results.'
he walked over to the camera and turned it off.

Ray was about to turn off the television and VCR when he noticed something strange. When the camera was turned off the video did not go to static like it normally would have. It was just a black screen. Then he heard it again: the voice, but this time it came from the video.
"You are not going insane, Raymond Sanders."
Ray emediately ejected the tape and ran it up into his home.
"Donavon! Donavon!"
The butler came running with an astonished look on his face.
"What is it sir?"
"I need you to watch this for me."
Ray put the tape into a nearby vcr and played from where the screen turned black. The voice was still there.
"Did you hear that Donavon?"
"Yes sir, but I must ask why did you whisper to yourself that you are not insane?"
"It is nothing Donavon. I just want you to make sure that it was there, you are dismissed."
Donavon bowed, but before he stood straight once more he spoke.
"Do not forget sir, you leave tonight for England. You have a lecture on Professor Evans' theories in two days. I hope you are ready."
then he walked out of the room.

Sam woke up at 7 o'clock after his first day of oddity. He grumbily got out of bed, collapsed to the ground, and got himself some eggs. "So...what's on the adgenda for today?" He played his phone messages and listened for an interesting one. An overdue movieand someone calling about an invite to a strip club, which interested Sam until he realized that it was for the night before. "If only the wierd time thing would happen right now." He laughed. Then, an odd message came up. "It's going to happen soon."
"What the hell? What's happening? and who the hell is that? sounds kinda demonic. Oh well, wrong number."
Next message was from some guy asking him to bring some machine to England. "Hell to the yes! Always wanted some tea and crumpets."

After Saga and Aya made it back to the concert hall, Shinya was all Para Para'd out and eager to rock out, so the concert began, with the whole hall shrieking for more Aya and Saga. The concert was going great until the third t last song...
"Weak with white which I can't get used to Just a sigh echoes
Though I'd be saved if I only knew the color of the sky
I want to someday forget even the deep struggling breaths
When even the strength of wishing so seems shriveled up"
"It will happen soon.."
Aya stopped playing and looked up confused. The rest of the band froze and the audience all stared at him.
"I'm sorry everyone. I thought I heard something." he spoke in to the mic. Aya started playing again and it was business as usual, with Aya extremely confused. After the concert, Saga confronted Aya. "What the hell was that?" he demanded.
"I'm sorry. I heard something. Someone. A voice."
"You can't be crazy until the tour is over." Saga snarled, walking away.
"I'm not crazy!"
"Hearing voices is the first sign of insanity." Shinya declared, washing his face to remove the makeup. "So do you want to go grab a bite to eat? I'm starved." he added.
"The fans want us to sign stuff-"
"They can wait. It isn't like we spent five hours signing their crap last time." Shinya replied, stripping to his boxers then putting on his street clothes. Aya did the same and soon they left with fans mauling Shinya's car to the point that Shinya got out and yelled at them so they would clear the way. Aya sat in the backseat pondering the voice he heard.

"Ja~ack"
"Yes father?"
Jack walked out of his room, one earphone in his left ear, the other hanging neglected down the front of his favourite black shirt.
"Son, I think its time for a change."
His dad was never one to beat around the bush. Even when he was little, anything Jack had ever asked of him was instantly given in a straight-forward and almost clinical manner.
He also, was impossible to change once he made his mind up about anything.
Jack sighed and then nodded, walking back into his room.
"Alright dad," he called back, packing up his meagre collection of belongings into his travel-worn black suitcase and shutting it. It only took a minute to pack for him, "where to this time? Michigan? Its been a while since we lived there."
"No boy, I think this time, we need a bigger change. How about England? You could learn more about that nutjob Professor you like so much!"

Jack froze as he walked out into the living room of the apratment they lived in and glanced down at the coffee table.
"England," he said in a detached way, "England..."
Things seemed strange for a moment, and for some reason he seemed oddly aware of everything around him. His father, pouring a cup of coffee to overfill in the next room, the timer on the oven one second from beeping, even the sound of a cat in the hallway outside, scratching at its doorway to come in. But what he noticed most, was the book sitting on the coffee table.
"Dad," he said, and the silence, and strangeness disappeared for the moment, "where did you get that book?"

"It's a present, for joining me in this hectic life we live." His dad called back, "got it at one of those older bookshops, I know I called him a whackjob, but that Professor Evans of yours has some pretty good ideas about the world. Only problem is the previous owner seems to have wrote a message in the front cover."
His dad shrugged as he walked in.
"Doesn't matter. Why don't you flick through it for a minute, while I call a taxi to take us to the airport."
Jack nodded and sat down, dropping his suitcase and opening the book.
There, in the front cover in spindly writing was a single sentence that would change his life forever.
It said;

It will happen soon. Are you ready, Jack Hisagi?

Time before the disappearance of Professor Evans...

Apo awoke on the seat he had slept on last night. One side of his body ached from lying on the seat, which had left imprints on him. Apo saw his worn and torn sleeping bag on the ground; he knew now that was why he felt so cold last night. He sat up and viewed the environment around him. The sun blinded his sight a little, then he realised where he was: a park.

How ironic he thought: A sleazy guy in a park that is well cared of.

How he despised the people who passed him and gave him a disdainful look. Apo managed to hear one of them whisper, Don't go near that man dear, he is nothing but a criminal. The words were more calloused than his own skin. Apo knows he wouldn't be a criminal if there were food provided for him everyday and shelter to hide behind.

He let slip of his thoughts and got up to have stretch. Apo picked up his only possession--the sleeping bag--and walked his way out of the park. It seemed to be just after dawn; not much activity around the park yet. He walked out of the iron gate: that closed the pathway into the park at night time, to protect the precious state of the garden. It was a barrier wasted, since it didn't stop the vandalism by much degree or maybe no degree at all. Apo smirked at the thought, cause he is one of the main offenders.

He walked passed the city and made his way in cramped areas between apartment blocks.

I wonder what the guys have planned for today?

Donavon was driving the limo with Ray sitting in the back reviewing his presentation. Neither one spoke as the vehicle had left the mansion, and it was silent for the whole trip. All Ray could hear, was the sound of his own thoughts as he decided what he would and would not say in his lecture.
"Sir we are here."
The limo pulled into the airport where Ray's private jet sat ready for take-off. When they were stopped, Ray got out of the car as Donavon grabbed his bags. The two walked over to the plane where Donavon gave the luggage to a stewart to store.
Ray turned to him and spoke.
"Enjoy your time off Donavon. Just don't let me come home to a ruined house." Donavon smiled as he made his joke.
"Sir, life is always dull for me when you are away." He gave his bow, went back to the limo, and drove away.

When Ray was settled in, the pilot came out to meet him.
"Hello sir, my name is Jason Danvers, and I will be your pilot for this trip. This is Jannet," he said pointing to a woman at his side. "She will help you with anything that you need. My Co-pilot David is in the cockpit prepping for take-off. I hope you enjoy your flight."
"Thank you, I will."
The pilot went back to the front of the plane. In a matter of minutes they were in the air. Since this was to be a long flight Jannet brought out food for him. The two made little conversation. On the projector screen were the visual aids that he had planned to use in his presentation on what Professor Evans Ideas would lead to. After a few hours, he shut it down and sat there. Jannet walked over to him.
"There are still four hours left in the flight, would you like me to put a movie on for you."
"No thank you. I had better get my rest, so I could be mentally ready for tomorrow."
He laid back his head and closed his eyes.

He was back at the universtiy sitting in a crowded lecture hall. Next to him was a video camera which was pointed at a podium in the front of the room. A man entered the room and walked to the front where he faced everyone that watched.
It was Professor Evans. He was alive, but no one else around thought this to be strange.
Then he realized this is not happening now. This is a lecture that he had given many years ago, but Ray could not remember this one. He had not been there to see this one, and there hadn't been a tape of it in the library.
Finally Evans began: "Today I will talk to you all about the potential Rift..."

The plane touched down on the runway in England. The jolt woke Ray from his sleep. The only thing that he could think about was this dream. Had there been a lost lecture about a rift. What was this about? Was the dream real, or was it just that, a dream.

"It's fine, Dad! I'm all right," said Dawn, getting back on her feet. But it seemed that Simon Turner wouldn't give up on the job at hand. He fussed about her just like her mother would. "I'm fine, Dad! Honestly, I'll be ok. I just got a bit scared, that's all ..." After reassuring him that she would get some sleep, he left her room to her own devices and so she climbed back into bed shaking ever so slightly. Her hands were shaking, she felt extremely cold in her warm bed and yet she had never felt so afraid before. Something was happening and she didn't like it at all. Dawn pushed her hair away from her face, so she could see the stormy weather outside. Never in her life had she been so scared of something other than lightning ...

The next morning, Dawn awoke still remembering what had happened. She got in the shower, got dressed into some comfortable clothes and joined her mum and dad at the table in the dining room. She couldn't help fiddling about with her food. Last night was still replaying over and over in her mind. If only she had said something to her dad, then maybe she wouldn't be in this state right now. After having her breakfast, Dawn proceeded to the back garden to play some netball to take things off her mind. But she knew that her mother was watching her. Elizabeth Turner was somewhat of a role model for Dawn having being able to understand most, if not all, the things she was going through. Dawn kept on shooting into the net, however, trying to get through this alone.

Sam pulled up to his friends house. Walking up to the front, he wondered about wether or not the flight to England was paid for. The door opened. "Yo, Kev, you called about a job to England or something."
"Yeah man, just deliver this package to some museum owner or something at this adress. I was given a ticket, but I can't go, I'm busy." Sam was given a small package and a plane ticket and drove off to the airport. Boarding the plane, he was amazed to see he was seated first class. "Wow..." He took a seat, relieved at how much better it was than flying coach, and quickly drifted off to sleep.

Jack stared at the book for the few seconds it took for the message to sink in and then he blinked and looked up.
"D-d-dad," he stuttered, slightly scared, "you said it was dedicated to the previous owner, but it says-"
he cut off as he looked back down and let out a startled shout.
The message, was gone, replaced with a scrawly blue pen with a signature in rough writing at the bottom.
"Hhnnn?" his Dad grunted, head poking out and suitcase in hand, "yeah, the guy who wrote it, that Evans guy, signed the copy for the owner. Thought you'd be happy." he added in a slightly offended tone.
"I, I am dad," Jack managed to get out, managing a wan smile for effect, "thank you very much."
"OK!" his dad exclaimed then, startling Jack so much he fell over onto the couch, "let's go, the taxi should be here now!" he glanced at his son and snorted, "no time for sitting down, let's go!"

A few hours later Jack was sitting staring out the window of the plane as they made their way to London.
"Man," the man next to him groaned loudly, punctuated by another groan and a sigh, "I hate flying. What about you kid?"
Jack simply grunted and continued to stare out the window, completely unaware of the strangers now growing anger.
"Hey kid," he said, voice growing in volume ever so slightly word by word, "I asked you a question."
Jack ignored him again, now interested in a flock of geese just visible out of the window, until the stranger grabbed his arm.
Jack turned, eyes wide and saw the man glaring at him with a murderous intent.

"Well boy," he asked in a low menacing tone, "do you dislike flying?"
"Let go of me!" Jack yelled and something flashed, the lights Jack thought in an oddly detached way, and the stranger let go with a yell.
"What was that for!" the man yelled, raising a fist until suddenly, he stopped, eyes wide.
Jack was unaware of what happened next. All he knew was that he blacked out and woke again when the plane had landed in London and that there was no-one in the seat next to him, or next to that either.
As he disembarked the plane, he caught sight of his dad coming back from First Class and he again silently cursed his dad for leaving him.
"Hey dad," he asked in a falsely happy tone, "how was First Class?"
They had just crossed the tarmac and had made it to the actual airport terminals.
"Well son-" his dad began, but he stopped as all sound ceased for a split second, as if everything had been suddenly muted, and then it turned back on with a vengeance as the plane they had just been on blew up.

Apo walked casually through the narrow gap and saw a gathered group. They were conversing with each other silently until they saw Apo strolling his way to them.

"Apo," Said one who looked like the leader of the group. "Come here, what a plan we've got for you today."

The smile on Derek's face could not deter Apo. Apo have been itching for something fun to do; he's been waiting for something like this for quite long. Today, he'll have his wish granted; satisfaction already on his side.

When Apo reached the circle, Derek showed a warm greeting by patting Apo's shoulder. "Mate, have we got a mission for you... Would you ever sacrifice yourself to become a decoy for us?" The sweet talk hadn't unnerved Apo's decision.

Quick in reply, Apo said, "You mean, become as a bait for you? Never."

"Now hear this before dumping the offer. You, like all of us here, would benefit from this. And I mean a shitload of money."

"The fuck if I know what you're going to do to me." Everyone gave a jovial laugh. Apo was up for anything: especially if people talked of money that many here desperately needed.

Everyone huddled closer a together and began to whisper again.

"So here's the plan..."

Ray never made it to his hotel room that day. His mind was on the dream he had on the plane. He had to find out if there really was a missing lecture. He had his driver take him straight to the University. The Librarian there was an old friend of his who allowd him to stay there as late as he needed. He searched through all the known files involving the lectures, but was unable to find anything about a rift.
This did not satisfy him. He felt that there must be something there that could give him answers. He continued to search hours after the sun went down. He got more desperate after each book, article, and essay he read. He was finding nothing.
It was Midnight when he finally found what he was looking for. It was in a book sitting in the back of the library. It was titled Conspiracies in Science. Most of the book involved Professor Evans. Ray read through it until he came to a part where it began to talk about the lectures and not what Evans was trying to teach. It said that all of the lectures given by the professor had been recorded, and all but one was available. That one was hidden away out of fear and that very few know of its subject, and those that do will never talk about it or have died since its recording.
Ray looked down at the pages with excitement in his eyes. His dream was true, or at least appeared to be. There was a missing lecture. As he continued to read he found more about its disapearance.
"All recordings and notes taken from this lecture were purchased by an unknown family in America. There was no name attached to the payments or mailing address, but a photographer was able to take a picture of the couple that recieved it."
Ray turned the page to see who the people who bought the lecture were.
emediately his expression went from excitement to complete shock. Right ther in front of him was a picture of his parents.
