I think so with every fiber of my existence. It's degrading, dehumanizing, self-harming, and quite literally genocide. All this and more can be proven :/

I'd like to hear other people's say. If you think it's an ok thing, say why. If you agree with me, likewise. Don't get too crazy/flamey with arguments plz : p

Well you are bound to come across powerful opinions that are the polar opposite of your own whenever you post something on the internet.

But no, I don't. I really don't have a lot to say on the matter other than that it is pretty great. I am more interested in how pornography is quite literally genocide.

Because annually, literally hundreds of billions of dollars are wasted on the pornography industry. Calculating the numbers, a single year's worth of money wasted on it is enough to give every person on Earth 3 meals a day for more than a year.

It's basically a chief cause of world hunger, IE death, IE genocide

Not to mention its effects on people like me with such a massive phobia, who have been driven to suicidal urges

Mehhh, depending on who you ask, Porn is degrading to women or it's empowering to them. Whichever takes your fancy.

I don't think Porn is genocide though. Unless you count the sperm wasted...I guess? :wacky:

I think if you like porn, good for you. But, bare in mind it's an over-dramatic exaggeration of sex for entertainment. I think a large chunk of the problem with it comes from people who can't denote between what's fake and what's real.

I see bad and good in it. Watching it doesn't make you a bad person.

I don't have any problem with it as long as the acts in the porno are legal. It all comes down to personal preference and in this matter I respect people who are against it as well as those that enjoy it.

I dont have any problem with Porn. What I DO have a problem with is people who act like stuck up assholes about it and bash people who enjoy watching it, or bash people who do the porn. If you don't like it thats perfectly fine, just dont be an asshole about it. Let the people enjoy it if they enjoy it. (speaking in general, this isnt aimed at any one particular individual).

I do not believe that pornography is bad, but it can be used in unhealthy ways, such as addiction. Then again, addiction can occur with alot of other things too whether or not they are bad or good. Like it was said above, if it is sex between consensual adults then there is no problem. If it's against someone's will or does things that are illegal than yes it can become wrong.

Pretty much this is what i think too. Though im not particularly bothered about people getting all high and mighty.
I have no problem with porn whatsoever. In my eyes its harmless and you can choose whether you wanna watch it or no. I think there are still a lot of people around the world who are very cautious when approaching any topic about sex and its still somewhat taboo to them. I think people like what need to kinda wake up to the 21st century. I dont think less of them for not wanting to discuss it but i think theyre silly for turning theyre nose up.

I'm not going to argue against those figures as I don't know. However if that were to be true I still don't think you can pin hunger, death and genocide (Genocide... porn... reeeeally?) on the pornographic industry. With that way of thinking the same and more so can be said about the music industry, mobile phone industry, gaming... list goes on... oh and that little thing called war.

Porn has it's place in the world and I don't see it as a problem.

I already know that I have the minority opinion on this, but I will go ahead and share my thoughts on this topic nonetheless. Bear with me.

I'm not a fan of pornography, and I do find the industry to be degrading. I don't support any "entertainment" industry that profits through sex - whether it's Playboy magazines, porn sites with a plethora of videos, even strip clubs (which may not include actual "sex," but it endorses the notion of "paying for pleasure").

Besides the fact that the industry is sexually objectifying - mostly for women, although they have decided to be a member of such an industry in the first place, for one reason or another (I won't make any specific statements on women considering a recent and related thread on that...), my main issue is that it's taking the "easy way out" to make big bucks. You don't need a degree to be recorded engaging in sexual activities or to dance around a pole. I won't deny that there are some necessary "skills" involved, but I find it disturbing that porn stars can potentially make more money than someone with a PhD.

Granted, I'm sure it depends on the context. Is the man or woman who decides to "act" in a porn doing so for financial reasons or for fame? Perhaps for both? Even if a person is struggling financially to make ends meet, I would not recommend going down this route - it just seems cheap to me, although it sounds insensitive for me to say so. And if someone is doing it for fame, then they are glorifying and perpetuating the industry, which I suppose will always exist so long as we have warm-blooded humans having sex for pleasure as opposed to purely reproductive reasons - which probably won't be going away any time soon.

----------

About a year or so ago, I remember taking a train ride back home from the city. There was a "gentleman" seated in the row in front of me watching porn on his cell phone. Interesting way to spend his commute.

Look, I don't care if it was a man or a woman - and sure, a person has the right to watch or do whatever one pleases, but I found the scenario to be highly disturbing. I suppose this is the equivalent to the whole "page 3" in the newspaper bit that others were mentioning in another thread. I was never familiar with that, but knowing how commonplace and "normal" it is concerns me. Just a tad.

Do I think pornography is bad? Not inherently, no. But I do believe that it further reinforces the notion that we should seek sexual pleasure through whichever means available? Definitely.

The idea of going to night clubs to "dance" with strangers (a.k.a. "grinding" sexual parts together) is considered 100% acceptable and "normal." The idea of "hooking up" and having one-night stands is commonplace. Apparently it makes me a moral "prude" not to engage in these activities. I acknowledge their existence, but I don't think I should be forced to adopt them as the standard way of living just because society has decided to prioritize sexual pleasure among it's values.

I apologize if I derailed from the topic a bit, but I think it's important to consider the interrelatedness of things.

Nothing exists in isolation; there is always going to be a domino effect, influential factors, or a larger system outside of one phenomenon.

I have two things to say about this topic:

* So porn can be beautiful, the word itself not so much. Flesh to me is flesh. It can in fact be educational.. to a degree. Though everything in excess is always a bad thing. So this leads into the next.

* Porn can be pretty detrimental at the same time. Though the perversion of it and the addiction are adjacent trends I see these days. People want more and want different, because they get bored with the same inane act. Those who are able to actually have sex every day, the need for it is probably less and the thought of porn probably frowned upon, unless they are a sexaholic. I believe nympho's exist. I don't believe they can maintain though.

So anyways, as long as it's not over the top. Skin is skin, it's art in the rawest form.

Here are my feelings about porn.

Firstly it depends on the type of porn you are watching. Whether it is the... pizza boy deliver kind... I think most of these are fine.

It's once you get into the... Anime ones usually that I find can be...problematic... with how much of it can go from normal... to... where people can act out their "fantasy"... which you visualize it...you see it... you eventually might do it... and that can be very bad on the type of porn you watch.

In the Japan Anime area, although most of it is "legal" there are very many questionable ones in it...

At the same time, I see nothing wrong with just watching porn. I mean... sometimes a guy or girl just need to... relieve themselves and their partner isn't in the mood :elmo:

In the end I am clicking good and bad

As long as it's all consensual for the actors starring in it I really don't see how it's bad. It's their bodies, it's their choice of career, so I don't see how it's harmful for them at all. Whether it's harmful for viewers is another story, I think in moderation it's absolutely fine, yes some people can get addicted, but there are many things humans can get addicted to. Addiction can turn something harmless into something dangerous and porn is no different. As for the genocide allegation, just because something makes a lot of money does not mean it is responsible for the hunger and deaths in the world. Otherwise the music, gaming and film/tv industries would be just as guilty of mass genocide.

In my opinion it's disgusting, really. I've known a few people who have been seriously addicted to it, but a small fraction of those people weren't annoying with their sexual obsession. I can't speak for the average person, but if something so brutal and mentally scarring becomes normal for them, it's no surprise people become a little weird because of it.

Yaaay Christian morality. "If it feels good, stop."

Also, science doesn't have a consensus on whether porn has any effect on... well... anything.

http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=913013 - "The incidence of rape in the United States has declined 85% in the past 25 years while access to pornography has become freely available to teenagers and adults. The Nixon and Reagan Commissions tried to show that exposure to pornographic materials produced social violence. The reverse may be true: that pornography has reduced social violence."

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160252709000715 - "It has been found everywhere it was scientifically investigated that as pornography has increased in availability, sex crimes have either decreased or not increased."

http://www.yapaka.be/sites/yapaka.be/files/actualite/pornography-rape-and-the-internet.pdf - "These results, which suggest that pornography and rape are substitutes, are in contrast with previous laboratory studies, most of which do not allow for potential substitutability between pornography and rape."

I don't care for it. Don't have time to watch it or deal with it. I really don't see any positives out of porn for myself but at the same time if someone else enjoys it then whatever that is their choice. I'm not gunna tell them otherwise just as long as they aren't telling me I should enjoy it or am weird for not liking/watching that stuff.

Like porn, there are other forms of addiction that can be harmful so I could judge someone else about their porn habits the same way they could have judged me about some of my addictive habits. All I know is I got 99 problems and porn isn't one of them ....

thats all I have to say really.

Let's call a spade a spade - porn is rarely "beautiful" or "educational", and it's sole purpose is something to speed along a wank on an otherwise slow day. :wacky:

It's possible for porn to both degrade and empower men and women. Its effects on the minds of young men and women, or on statistics about sexual violence or mental health, are unclear, and throwing up a horrendously biased website isn't going to tip the scales in either direction.

Personally, I'm quite happy with it. You can have almost the same argument about strip clubs, for example - as long as the people doing it are safe and happy, and the people viewing it know what they're doing, I'm lost as to why anyone else should or can get involved in someone else's experiences. Do what you want.

The main thing here I'd like to address is that ridiculous comment about porn being a cause for genocide. That almost sounds like something from a comedy sketch. "Everytime you wank off about Johnny getting topped by Fraser, a child in Africa dies."

I accept the multi-billion dollar industry that is porn, and that, ideally, money could be spent elsewhere, but that doesn't mean porn results in genocide. You could literally pick any successful industry and say the same thing based on your morals - a vegetarian could say the amount of money spent on agriculture could be spent on growing food in Africa. That's true, it could, but it's not, and it's no one's fault. I'm not entirely sure how to make it any clearer that comparing porn to genocide is just...horrifically wrong.

Watching porn seems perfectly natural to me. Masturbation is natural, and porn is primarily, an aid to masturbation. In fact porn has been around longer than Christianity.

Furthermore I think it's admirable that it's so freely available. It means as a society we have become more accepting of other people's sexual desires. People will always have sexual appetites, and openness can only be a good thing I think. That's not to say that I'm advocating watching porn on a train.

There are two decent-ish arguments I can think of that are anti-porn, it being genocide is clearly not one of them.
The first is the way it depicts women, which is often problematic, but pornographers have realised that alienating 50% of the possible market is not the most profitable strategy and are attempting to remedy that. It's still not perfect, but baby steps.
Secondly, and related to the first, is they way it influences how men see women, particularly male ideas of sex, and how women should look. I think that so much is written about this ameliorates the potential it has to distort how men view women. I think most people can recognise that it's an idealised vision of sex. I, unlike most male porn actors do not have a six pack or a ten inch penis. I have an eight pack and a foot long penis.
With porn being so readily available on the internet, people might be worried about the effect it has on younger consumers. People who may not be as aware of the inaccuracies of porn. They might be right, and in ten years time there may be many formerly young, then youngish people with unfulfilling sex lives, or, as this group are better known, the english.
I doubt it however, not too long ago, people were worried about the violence on TV, or in rap music etc. Yet despite the twin destructive powers of Goku and Ice Cube society seems to be, aside from poverty, the wealth gap etc, in fairly robust health.

I'm just going to point out that I'm atheist lol

I have no qualms against masturbation itself, despite being sexually celibate.
(Though ironically, it's proven that orgasm during use of pornography is ~50% less satisfying than orgasm while masturbating normally)
