I knew about some of the other comparisons (such as the Pete Townshend one), but this is the first I’ve heard of Quicksilver Messenger Service. You’re right, this is the same tune.
I suppose this tune has become a bit of a popular trope by now to signal magic or something magical/dreamlike. It sounds a bit like a stage sound effect for a spell, or the transition into a dream sequence, etc. Which is why it always worked as one of the most recognisable tunes in Final Fantasy.
I find particularly fascinating the parallel which you point out in that This Mortal Coil's cover of Fire Brothers (which is slower and darker) sounds like the slowed down version of Prelude used in FFIX as Crystal World.
