Title pretty much speaks for itself! To the best of my knowledge I think FFVII is the only game with one or two prequels, SO, which title in the series do you think is most deserving, or in need of, a prequel? Do you think it would benefit the original game any to have one? Or maybe you think FFVII needs another prequel? In which case can I also usher you over to our FF Unpopular Opinion thread? :smartass:

Let us know your thoughts!

Personally, while FFIX is my favorite, and I'd love to see a Sir Fratley or Tantalus prequel, I think FFX would have a great prequel opportunity where it could follow Braska, Auron & Jecht on their own version of the pilgrimage. It's kinda silly, but I think there could be a lot of opportunity there, and I'd love to see Jecht's character development as he goes through the game. I'd also love some more back story to Auron, as he's probably my favorite character in the original game. I dunno, I just think it'd be really interesting!

So let me know, which game do you think needs a prequel?

I'm with you on this one, I would LOVE to play a Final Fantasy X prequel. There's potential there, and a lot of backstory for Braska, Auron and Jecht still left to be fleshed out. :yay: Maybe, because there's only 3 of them, there could be guest party members who come and go to add further variety to battles... I dunno. The forgotten guardians or something. (I vaguely remember reading that they were working of FFX-3, but apparently it won't be a prequel... if it even sees the light of day.)

I agree that if there is any room for a decent prequel it is following Lord Braska's journey in Final Fantasy X, It would also be able to deliver extra details like about Yuna's childhood prior to Braska's pilgrimage - We never hear much about Yuna's mother, I found a quote on her FF Wiki page but I can't recall anything being stated in game:
Yuna was born in Bevelle to a Yevonite father, Braska, and an unnamed Al Bhed mother. Yuna was four years old when her mother died in an attack from Sin during her journey to the Al Bhed Home to repair her relationship with her brother, Cid. Her death established Braska's resolve to become a summoner and defeat Sin.
We've seen visual journals via the Spheres left which gives us some indication of what happened in their journey but there is plenty of grey areas they could fill out to make an engaging game. I really think this is the most solid concept to go forward with regard a prequel for an FF game.

I know it isn't even out yet, but what about Stranger of Paradise? I really want to know why Jack wants to kill Chaos so much. Seems like there is an interesting origin story to be told there...

If I was to be serious, however, a prequel for Final Fantasy V focusing on the Warriors of Dawn (Galuf et al) would be cool for the same reason that a Final Fantasy X prequel focusing on Jecht, Braska and Auron would be. I'd love to see the Warriors of Dawn at their prime. You'd essentially have a werewolf in your party as well, which is extra awesome. My only concern with that is that there might not be much of a story to be told in that which isn't already told in the original game via flashbacks and dialogue.

With the Final Fantasy X prequel idea, I guess that is in a similar boat. Narratively speaking much of this is already told in the original game itself, primarily. That said, as others in this thread have said, there are some grey areas and it could be interesting to see aspects of the story that we've never been able to see. It could be interesting if the truth of that pilgrimage isn't fully reflected in the select sphere recordings we see in the game, or in the occasional anecdote told by Auron or other members of Spira.

For Final Fantasy VI there is scope for a prequel in the story of Celes as a general for the empire, and also the descent of Kefka into magic-obsessed madness. I think not so much an RPG, but a narrative story about the creation of Kefka's persona which is told in a way comparable with the recent film Joker (2019) could be interesting. So that would require Kefka being the protagonist, which could be controversial. And very unlikely.

In general though, I would rather not have a direct prequel for most of these games. Same with sequels. They can come across as cash-ins. I'd be much more interested in a game set in same world or universe which expands upon the world's lore without having to inorganically force connections with younger versions of all of the cast we already know.

For example.... how about a game set on Final Fantasy IX's Terra but before the planet became sick and attempted to assimilate with Gaia? It could be really interesting to see actual Terrans in their own bodies inhabiting a living planet and actually living their lives. Seeing landmarks we are familiar with from the post-merger with Gaia (Oeilvert, Ipsen's Castle, the Desert Palace, and so on) but in their original Terran contexts and uses, with their original owners inside them. I think that would be fascinating to have a separate fantasy plot set on that world which happens to have these locations and much more. Maybe looming in the background is the threat of the planet getting ill and some people figuring out how to save the planet, it perhaps isn't the focus. Or if it is, the planet's doom is hastened by the villain and, with dark dramatic irony, the protagonists build a prototype android called Garland to help save the world and look after its people. We'll know how that goes...

I believe Final Fantasy 3, and Final Fantasy 5. especially interested in the Dark Warriors. Final Fantasy X would be another good option too.
