And the character Rene doesn't strike much as a potential villain character, and unless you modify him somewhat I can't see Shadow Mage as a real "main villain" one of many bad guys could fit though tbh.
Still, I won't try and tell you how to write your story, it's your story at the end of the day, not mine.
