I don't agree that American Dad fails. It is still pretty funny, but I love how randomly hilarious Family Guy is. A lot of the stuff is so "WTF?" that you'd be insane not to laugh. I think that the last couple of series haven't been too great though. The characters seem to have been changing, and it isn't for the better.

I really liked Family Guy during its first run and I still watch the old episodes because their hilarious. When they brought it back, it just wasn't funny anymore, IMO. It seemed like they were trying to hard and not letting the jokes flow like they used to. I never really got into American Dad. I saw a few episodes and it was okay but not good enough for me to make an effort to watch it every week.
But yeah, old episodes of Family Guy are better than American Dad any day.

So I go with Family guy. I do like both though.

Family Guy definitely kills American Dad. The show was kinda funny but it never really "found itself". It ended up looking like more of a pathetic rip-off of Family Guy than anything else.

I like American dad just slighlty more...mainly because i find Roger to be more hilarious than Stewie, and American Dad seems to go with more adult/political humour than Family guy...
Both shows are really good though.
And about the whole rip off thing, didn't the simpsons once have an episode where they had Peter in as a homer clone?

Family Guy and American Dad are made by the same guy... that's why the styles are similar. Basically his one show got canceled so he made another with similar characters.
