Heheh, I make all of my GFX with Adobe ImageReady, actually. I tried EVERY fucking way to crack photoshop and failed every time, so I just had to stick with that program. There's quite a few ways to improvise with the program, although I wish that I'd be able to use smudging. ;/

AAaah. Usually when people give a step-by-step tutorial like this, my first response is, "that's great, but WHY do that, and how can I adapt it to my own purposes? What's general principles, lessons, techniques one should take away from this?"
But I think I can see how (and more importantly) when and why to adapt the effects you demonstrated there for other uses. Yay!
You can teach an old dog new tricks. Although I shouldn't say that until I've given some of it a try.
One thing I know squat about is the proper uses of fill layers, and when one might be inclined to reach for one.
