Why Resident Evil 0 HD is great news for the series and gamers
Today, Capcom announced that they are working on Resident Evil 0 HD, a remastered HD port of their 2002 GameCube exclusive. While some HD ports/remasters feel like opportunistic cash grabs, we like to think that this one is a good thing; not just for us eager gamers, but for Capcom and the Resident Evil series in general. Here's why.

As fondly remembered as the GameCube was, the fact is it got hammered by the competition. Capcom were easily the most supportive third-party though with the original Resident Evil remake (or REmake), Resi 0 and of course, the incredible Resident Evil 4.

But back to Resident Evil 0. It's reasonable to assume many gamers have never played the GC original or the re-release that surfaced on the original Wii a while back. The recent Resident Evil HD Remaster broke sales records on PSN earlier this year, so the appetite for classic survival horror experiences is clearly there.

We're expecting a similar quality from this port, as the last one turned out very well when upgrading the GC original's visuals. There will probably be an alternative control scheme for gamers not wanting to use the old tank setup too. Frankly, we'll take the updated controls over the spin and move originals any day of the week. Not that there won't be fans out there who appreciate the older feel, and certainly the extra challenge they provide.

For many gamers, myself included, this presents an excellent opportunity to play a missing chapter in the Resident Evil catalogue. Sure, we've had the chance to pick up a copy from eBay, but unless you have an old TV knocking around the house, plugging in consoles like the Wii or GameCube into modern TVs doesn't do them any favours at all.

This second lease of life for Resident Evil 0 is yet another important step in the right direction for Capcom. After the huge success of Resident Evil 4, they focussed on the action angle too much for Resi 5 and 6, and interest started to wane. However, since then, they've been pulling us back in with titles emphasising the original's survival horror elements. Resident Evil Revelations was a good start, but it really came together with the episodic Revelations 2, which was a fond reminder of why we fell in love with zombies and Resident Evil in the first place. Add in an excellent re-release of the original game's remake and it has become clear that Capcom are waking up what fans really want from Resident Evil.

Capcom could go in two directions next. Announce Resident Evil 7, which will hopefully continue this trajectory towards the survival horror vibe but with the occasional Resi 4-esque action set-piece. Or maybe they'll finally answer the fans' request for Resident Evil 2 to get the REmake treatment too. Let's face it, Resi 2 with shiny new graphics and new controls would be fantastic. There are plenty of other games in their extensive catalogue that could do well with remakes too as I discussed in: Capcom planning more HD Remasters - are these games next?

The Resident Evil series is going through a change right now and it appears Capcom are rediscovering what made it a success in the first place. This is surely good news for the series as it seeks to re-establish its identity and it looks like survival horror could be on its way back. We're ready and it looks like Capcom may be too. Game on.

I hope really damn badly that Capcom have actually considered that resi should return to being resi. That survival horror is what made the series succeed in the first place and that the fans never wanted it to change.

Zero is possibly my favourite resi (regardless of the "stale" criticism it got from a few reviewers). Can't actually wait to crack on and play it again! Rebecca and Billy are due for a comeback imo, more so than any of the main 4 protags (where two of them have been ruined and the other two have had so much screentime).

Here's to finishing off the resi remake plat and moving onto Zero. I never beat it on normal mode so...here's to playing on hard mode! :monocle:

Resident Evil Zero: PC (Emulated) vs. HD Remaster Comparison Shows Radical Difference In Graphics

Capcom has announced a remastered version of Resident Evil Zero recently. This new version will get a visual overhaul just like Resident Evil HD Remaster, which can result in enhanced graphics compared to the original version of the game.

Resident Evil Zero still looks pretty good when we emulate it on PC, as we can bump the resolution to HD and get a much cleaner presentation than the GameCube original. It is interesting to see how the emulated version compares to the released screenshot of Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster, and we have to add, it is a BIG improvement.

You can check out a slider comparison between both version of the game below.

To begin, the added dynamic light completely changes the look and feel of the game. The background textures have also been improved from the original and are much more clear and sharper now. The character models have also received a bump in visuals and appear to be much more higher polygon now.

Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is set to release on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC in Early 2016.

What Resident Evil 0 HD Means For the Series

Instead of rebooting the Resident Evil franchise to its glory days, Capcom has decided to announce another remaster on the way to current and last gen consoles. Yes, the prequel to the series, Resident Evil 0 will launch some time in 2016 in Japan. A release for other territories has yet to be announced but it will happen considering the first remaster exceeded expectations.

The game was announced at an event in Japan and is currently in development. The original staff and director Koji Oda are returning to helm the remaster. Capcom will have more details on the game in the coming weeks. E3 anyone?
resevil0insert5For those that don’t remember, Resident Evil 0 takes place slightly before the events that Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine embark on the creepy mansion that loyal Resident Evil fans are fond of. The game features Rebecca Chambers, a police officer, as well as a prisoner on death row in Billy Coen. The unlikely duo must fend off the impending zombie outbreak. Players could switch between both characters on the fly throughout their playthrough with the game feature called ‘partner zapping.’ Both Chambers and Coen possess unique abilities that you’ll need to take advantage of if you want to survive.

Earlier this year, Capcom brought us all arguably the greatest entry in the Resident Evil franchise, with the game that started it all, Resident Evil HD. A high definition remake that ditched the older tank controls and gave players a newer, free form stick-based control scheme. Camera angles were slightly changed to create a more optimal playing experience. The graphics got a facelift that pushed all the textures to 1080p resolution.

Resident Evil 0 will most likely adapt all the key upgrades found in the remaster that was released this year. Capcom has suggested that “HD remasters will be one of their key business activities” going forward. So it’s plausible that we’ll be getting Resident Evil 2 and 3 again. But the question now becomes, will they get lazy and ship those entries with the original Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 1 graphics again?

I would certainly hope not. The work they have put into Resident Evil HD has certainly paid off being their fastest selling digital title in the company’s history. Resident Evil 2 and 3 would possibly rake in even more sales because fans have been clamouring for these games to receive aesthetic upgrades since the last generation. Almost as much as people that have been pleading for Final Fantasy VII remaster. They would be printing money if Resident Evil 2 were slated for a 2017 release and Resident Evil 3 the following year. Only time will tell if that will be the case. So far, sounds like Capcom is giving people what they want. The classics revamped in beautiful high-definition graphics. Now it’s your turn Square Enix.

All these remasters could be holding us off for another number entry in stored survival horror classic franchise. Everyone wants the return to the series roots in Resident Evil 7. So maybe them looking at their previous masterpieces will keep the ball rolling for what’s next.

Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster will release on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC sometime early 2016.

Do you think Resident Evil 0 remaster means more classic entries will see the light of day? Chime in the comments below.
