[11/04] Heavensward: FFXIV - Trailer and Info Roundup from Live Letter XX
Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida extolled to us the opportunity to take a glimpse at a few more snippets of information regarding the upcoming expansion in today's installment of the regular Live Letter series. The main highlight of the event is the full premiere of the Heavensward opening CGI trailer, similar to the "End of an Era" footage aired prior to the release of A Realm Reborn.
Take cautionary heed: the trailer features abundant spoilers from the end of the 2.x series main scenario. If you have yet to clear the "Steps of Faith" trial and watched every subsequent cutscene that follows, please bear in mind that the trailer will show footage depicting the ending.
As well as the trailer, an abundance of information old and new was disclosed in the usual format of fancy slides:
The main scenario is the Dragonsong War (the millennium-long war between Ishgard and the Dravanian Horde). This will be around 50-hours long as of 3.0.
New sidequests, naturally!
Further confirmation that the existing jobs and classes will have additional quests and abilities on their way to level 60.
RIP PS3s.
Double RIP PS3s.
Full flight maneuverability and control for flying mounts. No flying in 2.0 areas, as expected.
You wanted exotic landscapes...
...you can't get more exotic than flying landmasses.
Sorry, @Sprout, but you're going to need to get to at least lvl 30 in another job to get your hands on Machinist.
And Bards everywhere rejoiced.
I'd look ashamed too if I had to hold up a picture of a Lalafell.
Looks like Allagan Tomestones of Soldiery and Poetics will be retired for Law and Esoterics.
Materia V..? Hmm.
As if I haven't enough pressure to level up my crafting classes ASAP.
I can almost hear @Galadin rejoicing.
Regional folklore?! I can hear @Harlequin howling in pain.
Rowena is still making absurd cash off our backs.
Yay!
Anyone interested? No?
YES, FINE. I GET IT. I WILL GO LEVEL UP MY CRAFTER CLASSES!
More sightseeing? Who asked for this?!
We need to try the first one.
What can possibly go wrong here?
That floor is beautiful. Too bad a Lalafell nun is ruining the shot.
Basically Alexander won't be available at 3.0's launch. It will come in 2 weeks' time, followed by the Savage mode another fortnight later.

- FAINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward World Premiere (hah, they noticed the "FAINAL" during the guest segment)
- The video they showed during the test stream with all the jobs is part of the benchmark and was supposed to be released at choukaigi (2 weeks from now). Soken says they released that bit early to apologize to the fans for having delayed the expansion for a month (into the "not-quite-spring" date).
- To fly, hold jump to gain altitude, look down with the camera to go down. Fly into the ground to land; walk off ledge and you fly.
- Currently, flying mounts run at 90% the speed of ground mounts and fly at 200% the speed of ground mounts, but that might be adjusted, possibly up.
- You can be safe from ground monsters while flying, and there won't be any "sky monsters" to harass the flying players.
- There will be a quest to turn your companion chocobo into a flying mount. [Yay! Flying Liebchen! - Livi]
- There are plans to turn the current flying-like mounts (e.g. Ahriman) into actual flying mounts, but it won't be in 3.0.
- Paladins will get an additional combo, alternative to Halone. It will not replace Halone though.
- The new actions for combat jobs will need quests just like we've had to so far.
- They will reveal the new Dragoon limit break at Choukaigi.
- The new gear sets Yoshida revealed are from dungeon drops.
- New crafter skills will come from leveling, class quests, and the Specialist system.
- The Specialist system is meant to re-balance jobs so it's not like you need everything at max level to be able to do things. It'll still help, but the idea is to not make it mandatory anymore.
- They are changing the starting points for the current Frontline maps.
- New Monk PvP weapon will be a Dragon version of Sphairai.
- Craft Housing = build a miniature house inside your house. [...why? - Livi]
- Airships will be assembled from 4 main components (e.g. bow, stern, etc; I don't know all them naval terms ).
- 2.0 Content will have its difficulty adjusted. [Of course they will, otherwise very few people will actually get past the Steps of Faith trial! - Livi]
- Premade parties can go into dungeons with incomplete numbers (no mention of going alone). [You mean we can do a 6-man Titan EX run? - Livi]
- "Syncing to lowest IL" = mode where everyone's gear is level synced to the lowest item level allowed for the dungeon.
- The loot system is separate between Alexander Normal and Hard.
- Primal battles will drop tokens (guaranteed drop) that you can trade for the item you want, instead of having to spam them until you get your drop. This is not exactly like how it'll work on Alexander.
- Premade parties can check a "loot master" option, where the party leader decides who gets the items (no loot rolling). Yoshida mentions the possibility of "loot auctioning" (similar to what raid groups do with DKP, but possibly with Gil for PUGs).
- Premade parties can check an option that disables the "Need" roll option.
- Alexander Normal will work like the Crystal Tower worked (run as many times as you want, loot limited).
- There will be future updates with details on each new expansion system (new jobs, etc).
- (after showing a modified version of End of an Era updated for Final Coil turn 3): They will be adding Echo to Final Coil in a future update, before the release of the expansion.
